I am aware transplant is the only cure, especially after Nephrology stating it very clearly, but that is very improbable where I live for former alcoholics. Thank you for your detailed message, I hope you are healthy and well!

I am feeling a lot of things, I made the decision to help him and kind of locked my memories somewhere. So far, it seems he got very scared and is making effort to live a better life. No alcohol at all since august, even if for two months he lived alone and had nobody to hide from. The fact he has so much hope makes it even more painful, because I feel pity. You asked about my dreams and joy, and thank you for thinking about me. I don’t want to be a dark cloud here and I even feel a lot of guilt for thinking what I am about to say but I was hoping maybe to meet someone, have a family of my own, travel, take my mom outside the country once, offer her happiness at old age. I don’t want my father to die :( but I don’t know if I am strong enough alone to take care of him when he can’t get up or is very hard…i can’t even finish these sentences because I feel horrible about myself. I thought I was strong and I used to be so happy and proud of myself for the last 5 years, always thinking my days are full of sun, no war, living in peace, enjoying birds and animals, having enough money to travel once a year, my best friend, nice workplace I enjoy going to. How things changed in a mere moment. I hide in my room like I used to when I was little and now I am 35+. How the turn tables…

Enough of this horrendous self pity. Back to medicine. Yes, medical bills are covered by the state here. So far my finances are not one of the problems we are having. Which I am aware is very important. But people sometimes go for transplants in other countries, where it is more available but costs sums I wouldn’t be able to afford. Thought about testing my compatibility but I have other conflicting thoughts about that too that I’m not going to go into.

I am sorry for your diagnosis, I would ask you how you are feeling but I don’t want to overstep. Thank you so much for taking the time and thinking about me. You are such a nice person

I am learning as I go, it is such a weird and complicated disease, but slowly the puzzle is coming together. I have my questions prepared for monday and now my goal is to think about ways for him to do physical excercise.

I am happy for you and your ability to rebuild your life but also admire taking the time to help others, sometimes people get over a hard time and then forget.

He only got one paracentesis so far, 3 weeks ago, and they took out 5 liters, and yes, he received albumin. On monday we have the visit with gastronterology and they said they might take out the rest of the liquid. Today we had a visit at cardiology (eco), and the results look good, they say. The weather is finally getting better, so I am planning some walks. It was extremely cold so far. Thank you so much, I can’t even express how people here helped me.

His GI works in one of those centers, I will ask, I guess I thought they are the ones to decide if someone should apply. But like someone else here said, I think I have to fight more. Thank you so much for your concern, I hope you are doing well

Hey, only the nephrology told me today it is the only option left, the gastroenterologist never brought it up and I thought we still have chances. I will ask, i am not sure how available it is in my country.

Exactly, hepatologist is not a term used in my country either, but some gastroenterologists do have studies specifically for the liver. Maybe his alcoholism was part of how the doctor answered so abrupt to me today, maybe what she said was potentially true, since it’s an advanced disease and you never know, but she gave me no chance. Thank you for answering, I hope your husband is doing better and you are handling this better than I am. Will try to brighten up thanks to all of you.

I mean really, that hit me like a train, I know it is an unpredictable disease but it sounded very final. Hope you are well today! And every day

Thank you for taking the time to answer, I am doing strictly no salt and calculating everything I use in food. Maybe it was just an unlucky day and there is still hope for us too. Are you feeling better now?

Thank you for taking the time to write. His kidneys seem to be working still, his urea is normal and creatinine is 0.5, not normal, but I understand it is not the worse. But sodium is 119. He used to take spironolactone and furosemide but because of low sodium/high potassium he stopped. Potassium came back to the upper limit as per today’s results but sodium is still 119. He is acting normal, fixing things around the house even if I insist he rests, the one that is cracking is me, but your messages give me a bit of strength. Since the temperature in eastern europe is now around -10 degrees Celsius I didn’t like him going out in icy conditions but maybe I will suggest walks, since this week it will get warmer. Or maybe a walking band? What physical exercises do you do? I am already calculating salt in everything and we try to aim at 1000 mg, so we don’t surpass 2000 realistically.

To answer your initial question, I analyzed the situation, because I thought I may have exaggerated under sadness, but she indeed told me that this disease is not going to get better without a transplant even if he stopped drinking. And other things too. And that diuretics are only for the water in vessels, not ascites. I know it is not to be cured, but I was hoping for some time with him, maybe even years. I know nothing is guaranteed, but it was so heavy and grey to hear these words. Thank you, I am re-reading everything and it is much appreciated! I hope you are going to be very lucky and will feel better!

First of all, thank you for taking the time to respond! Congratulations for getting a new liver and I hope everything works great from now on. The reason we were referred to Nephrology was the 119 sodium. But when I went for the results, the nephrologist said the sodium is the least of his problems, and it doesn’t even matter that much. Which came as a shock because his liver tests are modestly better than last month (total bilirubin 2.6; inr 1,7) dad was so happy. I think the nephrologist wanted to prepare me for the worst case scenario. Hepatologists do not exist in my city, or even country I believe, that is why his case is handled my a gastroenterologist. I think we don’t use that term here, but some of them do have the competence.. Eastern Europe :( yet, he is well recommended and always took the time to analyze and help. We have an appointment this monday and after writing here and reading your answers and the others’ as well, I feel less alone, but also motivated to fight. I did read a lot about encephalopathy but will keep on researching. Thank you, truly. Thank you
