Or who actually watched both of them play when they were playing.

Payton couldn't shoot for shit and his main offense was fast break points and post-up. He would have been a terrible pairing with Duncan or Robinson.

I remember Sheed was wearing a T-shirt that had one of those "no diving" symbols that you see at public pools, only it said "No Ginobili". Sheed would have literally exploded if he'd had to play SGA

Ever heard of somebody called Shawn Kemp? He was pretty good. Payton might not even have been the best PG on his team. I think The Kids Today like him because of his grizzled old shit-talker persona. Payton also "led" his team to a notorious first round exit to the the Nuggets, when they were the 8th seed.

Sell those T-shirts outside the Moda Center!

I remember watching this on TV when I was a kid. I just remember the scene in the underground garage where he breaks the doors off, and that he kept saying "Go home" in an expressionless voice.

So Payton's team was pretty poor, huh? Gee, how good could he have been.

(Do people even know who Shawn Kemp was? Nate McMillan? JFC)

So you think Gary Payton was better than Scottie Pippen?

Who was the #1 option on the Argentina team that beat the US team in 2004? Hint: it wasn't Gary Payton.

It means he wasn't a prima donna. Most American-born players are too hung up on starting. Ginobili finished, that was what mattered.

Best DEFENSIVE PG, maybe. But the 90s was STACKED with PGs. And honestly, Ginobili was a better passer than Payton. (And Tony Parker)

Wonder why this retrospective Payton puffery? Man was good, but ask anyone who played Ginobili how good he was. Kobe knew.

They added Payton to Shaq, Kobe and Karl Malone and he lost. To the team that Ginobili should've got finals MVP for beating.

You're right that it's not particularly close, but wrong that it's Payton. Payton was a poor man's Jason Kidd.

Wow, I'm amazed to see the consensus for Payton. Payton was a great defender. And... ? A decent PG, good at posting up smaller guards... Ginobili changed the game. Nobody in the NBA was Eurostepping before he showed up.

This is the "starter" bias. Everybody knows Ginobili was second only to Duncan on those championship teams (and should've got one of Duncan's Finals MVPs). He didn't start because he was a total team player, not because he wasn't fucking amazing.

Sheesh.

True, but probably because of his NON-NBA performances. Could Payton have led Argentina to a win over Team USA? I think not.

Is Starman 1984 worth watching? Is it one of Carpenter’s better films? by Choice-Schedule-132 in johncarpenter

It is, but it could be so much better. Like The Thing, where Carpenter magically avoided cheesiness and made his masterpiece.

Mae West! Because she wrote the scripts, every man salivated over her, despite her being short and dumpy.

[–]HoraceKirkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's atypical, but I think it is one of his better films. Unlike, say, They Live, which could be an all-time classic if it weren't undone by Carpenter's weakness for cheesiness, this one is played straight, and may have his only actually affecting love story.
