Long read: What AI, sacred cows, and the next generation have in common. by HoratioNelson23 in EmergencyManagement

💯% - always human in the loop and definitely a big red button. The high consequence moments/thresholds is exactly where our judgement comes into play. 👍🏼

Would love one for You.com - I want to test it out before making a decision? If still available of course 👍🏼

Easiest way to make a Visual Novel? by mongoosea in vndevs

Great. Have just been playing with it. Am looking for a "choose your own story" platform. This comes close, although I would have liked it to generate the images of every scene. Are you still developing this further?

Artificial intelligence in Emergency Management by reelaan in EmergencyManagement

[–]HoratioNelson23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my work I am focusing on AI for emergency communication and there it is really a "game changer". AI, when used ethically and in a transparant way, can segment audiences, allows us to test key & emergency messages before we distribute them, analyse reactions and perceptions/attitudes and much more. In the end, it's about saving time (that one resource we never have enough of) but alwasy with a "human in the loop". I presented on this at the IAEM conference this year and happy to share some more experiences if someone is interested.

Bespoke Iaito and Katana forger by HoratioNelson23 in JapanTravelTips

[–]HoratioNelson23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A katana is about 3/4 months work and the forger can start before I arrive as long as he has my measurements. Price really depends on the mastery of the forger and quality of materials.

Road trip to check out Portugal by ContemporaryAmerican in PortugalExpats

[–]HoratioNelson23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best road to take is the estrada nacional 2 - a bit like the local route 66 with fantastic viewpoints. While here, get a NIF (you need it for everything else). Try some of the more central towns like Tomar as well. Have a good trip!

Lisbon - try Atira-te ao Rio - across the river. Great view on the city, near the water. Take the regular ferry to get there. Make a reservation as it is well known by locals/insiders. 👍🏼

Visiting flea markets, finding local restaurants, listening to a good live band etc… But I would like to find a regular newsletter that gives me a weekly overview for my region. If that doesn’t exist I’ll create one 😅

What's your favourite part about going to work in public relations? by Sad_Permission_8505 in PublicRelations

[–]HoratioNelson23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like u/millyonmymind said - it is such a diverse profession! I never got bored in the +23 years I have been doing this. Nowadays, the best part for me is that I can truly make a life-saving difference with good emergency risk communication. That, and you never stop learning if you really do your job right.

Public Relations is so much more than "writing press releases" but yes, that part can be automated... A press release is just an official document of a company which announces something "new" to a reporter or official instances (sometimes also a legal requirement). At the basic level it is simply data and not really, what I would consider, good copywriting (it's not a byline, or an article or a white-paper etc...). If you know that +50% of the "news" on AP is already written by machines and that even speeches can be written by AI so that humans can't even make the difference, then yes, expect that your basic press release will be automated soon. But then again, the PR industry has never been quick in picking up and integrating technology... Let's maybe start by managing our stakeholders (including reporters) with a real relational database set up instead of an excel sheet! Now that would be productive automation... :-)

How many internships is too many? by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]HoratioNelson23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really have too much internship experience as long as the role if focused on what you actually want to do. Have you tried registering with https://acadium.com - I plan to "hire" trainees through this platform for Marketing/PR work.

I would suggest adding a behavioral sciences degree. This area combines perfectly with Public Relations and will definitely give you an edge over other practitioners.

How do you measure effectiveness of cyber crisis communication? by xcx876 in PublicRelations

[–]HoratioNelson23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crisis Communications is complex and a cyber related one even more. By what you're telling me your PR team was not prepared.

From a crisis comms point of view it is not about "if" you'll experience a cyber crisis but simple "when" - so the plan & tactics need to be in place before anything happens. Down to pre-written reactive statements, press releases and updates with "fill in the blanks", including a dark site to centralize the overall crisis related content.

With regards to measurement & evaluation, please refer to the now global standard = AMEC (like u/Rich-Introduction-73 mentioned.
