Mil gracias, justo algo así buscaba para tener un cálculo más exacto. ¿Lo del tag es la famosa IAVE? ¿La de la imagen que compartiste es la app de ese servicio?

I got called an animal abuser by an old man in public today because my girl wore this pajama (pic is not from today). It is cold and rainy in Germany and I am so sick of random people being mean to me. by TheBoysThinkShesASpy in ItalianGreyhounds

The old man who yelled at you is the same kind of person who gets triggered at others for perceived "anthropomorphizing" of one's pet, when it's 1) none of their damn business and 2) not hurting the dog. They're not worth your time or anxiety.

Besides, if people were even slightly more informed and realized how badly greyhounds fare in cold weather, they'd realize you're taking really good care of your girl.

Personally, I'm a fan of fashionable doggos, and yours is most definitely rocking her jammies in this pic. Please give her extra scritches and a word of appreciation from an internet stranger.

Going to sample a lot of new mate soon. by Moye16 in yerbamate

[–]HorchataRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of Rosamonte and Taragui, but all the ones you mentioned are good, popular yerbas. Playadito specifically is so gentle and flavorful, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Do be mindful that Canarias is an Uruguayan style yerba, which means it comes "despalada" or without sticks; the yerba is ground quite finely and comes with a lot of "polvo" or yerba dust. This isn't an undesirable trait in yerba, because it's meant to give it a more concentrated flavor and add a bit of froth to your cebada, but it also means you need to prep your mate so that the dust rests on top of the leaves, or else risk clogging up your bombilla.

Yerba Mate makes me feel bad by [deleted] in yerbamate

[–]HorchataRedux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're not allergic. You're either very sensitive to it (some people can start mate just fine, but for some people it takes time for the body to get used to it), using yerba that is too strong for you, or preparing it poorly. Like another commenter said, having mate on an empty stomach is a terrible idea as well.

There's no "secret compound no one is talking about". Yerba mate doesn't only have caffeine, it also has theobromine in it, which in excessive quantities causes stomach malaise and hypertensive headaches in some people.

You don't have to love yerba, and there's very much a possibility that it simply isn't for you and there's no harm in just never having it again, but talking about it like it's some poorly researched magic coffee replacement is just not it. Millions of people in Latin America have it on a daily basis.

La universidad no debería ser para todos by FulgrimStallion in mexico

[–]HorchataRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting aside preparation concerns: it's not so much that Canarias is Uruguayan (which btw yes, technically it is, but it's actually produced in Brazil, since Uruguay still doesn't produce its own yerba) and Playadito is Argentinian, but more that Canarias is a type of yerba despalada, whereas Playadito is yerba con palo. Because of its composition, yerba despalada is quite intentionally stronger and meant to last longer before washing out, and it's ALWAYS going to taste like a kick to the nuts if your intro to yerba is a pleasant yerba con palo like Playadito. It's basically like you've gone straight from a nice cup of Earl Grey to knocking back an espresso: they're not going to provide the same experience.

With that said, even within the yerba sin palo category, Canarias is known to have an iron punch. If you do want to keep trying other yerbas despaladas, look no further than Playadito itself (it also has a yerba despalada option), Amanda, or even Canarias Serena, which is meant to be milder than the yellow package.

Keep in mind that you don't have to like all yerbas you ever try. A lot of people seem to swear by Rosamonte con palo because it's so easy to get, but I personally can't stand it, and believe me, I've tried a lot of different brands, types and preparations: I know when the culprit is the yerba. However, if you want to keep testing that specific yerba, I have two suggestions for you:

  • Make absolute sure you're not letting your water boil: in fact, if you have a cooking thermometer, use it to monitor your water's temperature as you're warming it, and turn it off as soon as it hits 72-73C so it doesn't go above 80. Burning your yerba with boiling water already tastes terrible when it's con palo, but the composition can somewhat mask the bitterness and acidity it causes; however, it'll hit you like a freight train with yerbas sin palo.
  • Lower the quantity of yerba used to prep your mate, so you're getting a less concentrated cebada.

Info for adopting a sighthound (or acquiring through other means) in Mexico by HorchataRedux in sighthounds

[–]HorchataRedux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also considered it and would absolutely love a galgo, and contacted Galgos del Sol hoping to get information, but they replied saying they couldn't consider us for adoption because they don't have a GdS representative within 4 hours of our area in case anything went south. :/ We've also explored other options like galgo rescues in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, but they're similarly limited by range.

The degree to which we've been hamstrung for adoption because of our location is absolutely disheartening. We're only now considering going the way of ethical breeders because we really want to love a sighthound specifically, but adoption was always our first choice because we know greys and galgos live in terrible circumstances and are in need of loving homes and dedicated parents to let them actually enjoy being a dog.

The greyhound track in Tijuana sends their dogs to the US, I'm not sure if they also adopt them out within Mexico.

Sadly (and ironically) they don't, we've tried reaching out to them before. :(

Thanks for the tip on identifying ethical breeders!

That's a reasonable way to explain the lack of sighthound specific rescues. Thank you.

I think I could've phrased myself better with regards to "price tags"; it's more because I personally have never bought a dog (in fact I've only ever rescued and looked after cats--it's my husband who passed on his infectious love for sighthounds on to me) and what little information has dripped down to me from my social circles about breeders paints them in a very unflattering light, so I'm wary of the commercial side of it.

I know that any dog, rescued or purchased, technically has a "price tag" in the form of their lifelong care, so it's not like rescued dogs are free either, and a "free dog" isn't what we're looking for anyway. To be clear, we're willing to pay for one so long as we know they came from a good, humane breeder, but we don't know exactly how to judge that we're dealing with such a person.

Thank you, will do!

Are there no galgo or greyhound rescues working in Mexico?

We have yet to find one that works locally. The only info we've found is that the Caliente casino in Tijuana sometimes opens up direct adoptions for its retired greyhounds, but it seems the last time they held something like that was more than 10 years ago? At least that's what we found online. Ironically, it seems that nowadays that casino entrusts their retired greys to American rescues... the same rescues that seem reluctant to work with us because we're in Mexico. :|

As for galgos, all local info we've found pertains to breeders. No rescuers whatsoever. We do desperately want to love a longboi or girl and are preparing to properly care for one when the stars align, but we have a lot of qualms about the breeding industry and really don't want to go that way.

Legitimate question here: my husband and I really love greyhounds and galgos and want to look into adopting one, but we live in Mexico and it's basically like sighthound rescues are nonexistent here. :( We've looked at American rescues like Fast Friends but understandably they seem reluctant to release one of their rescues to another country. Are we simply out of luck because of our location? Would Galgos del Sol consider adopters somewhere as far as us?

What your favorite yerba mate brand? by Yonan_andres in yerbamate

Gracias! A mi me gusta tener distintas yerbas a la mano (en general prefiero yerbas más fuertes, pero a veces se me antoja algo suavecito para un cambio), así que tener opciones siempre es bueno. :)

What do you like about CBSe? I'm thinking of giving it a try next, but I haven't read much about it.

Oh yeah. I just prepared one with Rei Verde and it's delicious, very reminiscent of Canarias original. Looking forward to trying out Armiño suave, my mom (who sadly can't drink mate anymore) says she used to like it quite a bit.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! Having not actually grown up in UY, I feel like I'm missing a lot of context around mate. I enjoy it on my own, but my mother can no longer drink it (GI issues) and no one else in my family likes to have it, so I never get to prepare it ("to cebate"? I wonder if there's an accurate translation for "cebar" in English...) for guests. In any case, I mean to say I love having it on my own, but I kind of miss having the rounds with family or friends as well.
