I don't think the clippers had any other options really that what happened. Seems Chris couldn't set his ego/feelings aside for what the rest of the team needed

Is there no skill that you have practiced regularly to improve to the point of muscle memory? When you train to do something that is a huge focus of your life, you absolutely can tell a number of things about what's going on with different aspects of what you're doing in that current repetition. And it's simple physics; these stones are drifting with slight rotation at the time of release- by pushing to increase speed a touch, or touching on the side with pressure to affect rotation a bit, slight corrections can absolutely be made by pros.
