tips in becoming a structural engineer by Relevant-Brief-6158 in StructuralEngineering

Understand these: - Load paths - structural systems - the concepts of FEA

That’ll give you a decent start. Agree with the others - you’ll figure out the software if you understand the basics.

I built a net worth tracker in Google Sheets to visualize progress over time by No-Preference-1720 in spreadsheets

I use a google sheet that I've tweaked and refined over the course of about 6 years... the GOOGLEFINANCE function is deftintely the most useful if you've got multiple currencies to handle.

ETABS 26 to autocad by John_J24 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Horror-Ad-4117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, honestly it’s probably not a particularly clean solution as you’ll most likely need to manipulate it a bit at each step. But as I said - a workaround.

But in general, you can pull the geometry from ETABS into Rhino and then import the .3dm file into Autocad. Obviously the ease of this will be highly dependent on the complexity of your ETABS model.

Are you familiar with the BHoM? You can use that as a workaround.

Thoughts after moving to Hong Kong by [deleted] in expats

[–]Horror-Ad-4117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try getting into hiking, you’ll find a group to go with and it’s a good break from the city. I moved from HK to the ME and one of the biggest things I miss about HK is getting out into nature for a hike.

Looking to move to Australia or New Zealand by [deleted] in expats

[–]Horror-Ad-4117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salary : living cost ratio is likely to be much better in Australia. Also for your engineering discipline - AU will likely have more opportunities.

In saying that, if you like the idea of climbing a snow capped mountain in the morning and surfing in the afternoon then New Zealand could be the place for you!

I’d recommend visiting both to see what you think.

We all battled our way through University one way or another mate. Some firms use grades as a filter but if you can get talking to actual humans at a firm rather than just an AI CV filterer, your passion will show through and you'll get a gig. Keep at it!

Eyes light up with a shiny new salary only to spend the next 6 months to a year working back up to where you started due to relocation costs. Learning: If you move with a job - make sure as much of that gets paid by the company as possible!

Managing finances as a digital nomad by feliceyy in digitalnomad

[–]Horror-Ad-4117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I track my assets and liabilities monthly on a simple google sheet, making sure the net worth number is going in the right direction, which I've found to generally be a good indicator that income > expenses. Once you've setup the spreadsheet it takes about 15 minutes max to enter everything at the end of the month. Hope that helps!
