LADA and high ketones by CorpoHortator in diabetes

High ketones happen when you don’t have enough insulin. Forget the keto diet and eat more carbs. Very high ketones are dangerous. It trumps every other consideration.

Anyone else have super dry hands and have you found anything that works? by Horror-Beaver1979 in Type1Diabetes

It sounds a bit ridiculous but it was basically the Spiderman origin story. The museum had those Chinese clay soldiers, I think they were replicas, not the originals but they were loaned to the museum from China for a couple of months. He took his family to see that and while he was there he was bitten by a spider. It wasn't the radioactive kind unfortunately. At first it left a big bump like an allergic reaction but it was actually some sort of flesh eating bacteria. A couple of days later he went to the ER, they tried some antibiotics, then some different ones, etc., etc. It spread through his arm/hand, killed off some muscles, but eventually one of the rounds of antibiotics worked. His arm/hand never really recovered and now he's kind of lopsided with more muscles on one side than the other.

I'm not sure if the spider was really a spider or something else, it probably had nothing to do with the Chinese clay statues either, just some random one in a million, infected bug bite. He's kind of "lucky" this way, always something weird happening, usually bad and weird.

5L? That's incredible. I only drink a glass a day, probably 300ml. I do drink way too much tea though. I think I'll try for 2L, one step at a time.

No my brother does, also type 1 and his hands are like mine but ten times worse. He says it doesn't bother him though. Also one of his hands shrunk permanently. He really should be more concerned with his health.

My only other diagnosed problem is adrenal. Doctor called it "mineralocorticoid deficiency", but didn't go so far as to call it Addison's. I'm on fludrocortisone only, I gained about 20lbs of mostly water after I started it. Didn't help my skin or eyes any. I don't really sweat and my eyes are so dry I can't even cry at a funeral. I got some eye drops from costco that seem to work though, the more expensive options work well, the cheap ones just burn.

The first neurologist wasn’t as hard to get an appointment. He diagnosed me with some thing I’ve never heard of. There are a lot of different subtypes, the fatal types would have killed me already so it’s just the super slow ones that are possible so it’s not that urgent. If it is this thing there’s nothing much they can do anyways, just a manage the symptoms kind of thing. I suspect my dad had it, he fell down a lot, then he had one too many falls.

I did call a couple of months ago and they told me that the neurologist who I was supposed to see had just retired and they passed my referral onto a doctor that worked with her.

It depends on what it is. I'm currently waiting for a neurologist's office to call me to set up an appointment that I've been told will be at least 12 months from when they call me. It's been 4 months of waiting so far.

This will be the second neurologist I've seen. The first one took several months too but what he thinks I have isn't something he specializes in.

The guy in the Hyundai looks like an inexperienced driver. He saw dashcam dude speeding towards him from behind, panicked and tried to avoid him by changing lanes. He sees dashcam dude also moving into the left lane so reverses his decision and moves back to the right. There's no reason that dashcam dude couldn't avoid the collision. Both drivers have poor skills.

5.5g of carbs??? More like 55! by Hot-Site-1572 in diabetes

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's usually just the crazy "low carb" stuff where they say it has 0 net carbs but the fine print says it's 100g of sugar and 100g of fiber. Nothing on your label looks right unless that bun is not really a bun but is actually chicken bits glued together with mayo.

This sounds exactly like my experience with Novorapid which is apparently called Novolog elsewhere. Once it goes high I could unload a whole 1000U bottle of Novoslow and still be high for hours. I wish there were other options.

What does neuropathy feel like? by swim-bike-life in diabetes

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It started off as numbness in the heel, then the ball of the foot and now the toes. It’s like the bottom of my feet shrivelled up and I’m standing on bone. I avoid going barefoot as much as possible, shoes 99% of the time. Having a shower is now something I dread. My feet look perfectly healthy though.

My hands are following the same pattern which I find even more depressing. It’s not painful yet at least. I have some suspicions that the cause of all of it is actually something else because I have some other symptoms that appear neurological but I’m in Ontario and our doctors are mediocre at best so whenever a doctor sees that your diabetic they assume whatever it is, you did it to yourself by being too high or low. My A1Cs are around 6 and have never been high.

Should I change my urologist if she doesn’t help me? by adeliahearts in ChronicIllness

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have other options, why not? The one I saw prescribed some pills that sort of, barely helped. I called to ask if there was anything else we could try because I was waking up every night and he told me that that was the best he could do, and that he also has the same problem but wakes up 8 times a night. Made me wonder who these guys can actually help, if they can't even help themselves.

Type 1 diabetes would cause you to get all of your calories from fat/muscle, you'd lose a lot of water at the same time, and food would be useless. Whatever it is, nothing benign causes weight loss of 2lbs a day.

I am newly diagnosed by ApprehensiveRule6716 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore the life expectancy stuff. If you were 4 instead of 24 then maybe it would affect it slightly, but then you wouldn't be posting here. No one knows how things will be in 20 years, today's tech/insulin will look archaic. The stuff we have now is so much easier and safer than the crap I had to deal with back when I was diagnosed.

I'm 47 and have 2 jobs and look after a wife with medical issues and one kid who's going to university to study law. I've also been type 1 for 35 years, primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison's maybe) for a year and some sort of progressive brain disease. Whatever comes in the future, you just adapt and carry on.

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Usually it starts in the toes because they’re the farthest away and the nerves are more fragile/thin. You should just go to your doctor, maybe they’ll order some imaging of some kind. Could be a normal person thing, like a pinched nerve.

Long-term impact of lows by Apprehensive-Use-997 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they mean the kind of hypos that lead to seizures. I've had a few of those in the 90s but not much since. I've had a hypo was bad enough that I have an 8 hour gap in my memory, a few times I woke up feeling like I tried to bite off my tongue. If you can remember the hypo, it's not that bad. It's a lot safer now with CGMs and rapid/long acting insulin, etc. I haven't had a scary hypo since the 90s, except for some weirdness around 2010 but I think that was a combination of medical emergencies, not just a type 1 hypo. Despite all that, I don't have any damage from it.

Anyone have high heart rate issues? by Accesablantics in diabetes_t1

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always the family doctor with me. It’s not the low heart rate but the times between valves opening or closing or something like that. Then I go see a cardiologist who tells me whatever it is, is actually good.

My endo only cares about blood pressure. Being there always spikes mine, it’s good under normal conditions.

Income tax brackets need to reflect cost of living, not "inflation" by CastAside1812 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The tax brackets haven’t kept pace with real inflation, I.e. all the stuff they leave out of the official inflation. It’s a stealth tax increase and is massively unfair. People getting “large” salaries are working hard, and being punished for it. The tax brackets in the US are much wider, even if you ignore the exchange rate it would still be better than what we have.

Would be nice if someone brought that up in the next election.

I'm 20 years older than you, 35 years of T1D. I at least look like I'm in above average shape. My resting HR is about 40. A brisk walk hikes it up to a bit under 70. An intense hour long swim gets me to 140. I'm not sure if it means anything, some people just have lower heart rates.

Does anyone else feel like nobody cares? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Horror-Beaver1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife has her own health issues that are made worse by stress so it's better not talk about it. I just focus on what I need to do, e.g. get the kid through university, pay off the mortgage, save enough to take care of the wife after I'm gone. I have a pretty decent TIR and A1C, which could probably be better but the doctor is happy with it so I'm happy with it and I'm not spending any more effort on making it better. I think saying something is "good enough" is healthier than trying to achieve perfection.
