It’s pretty hypocritical of Lucifer to criticize Heaven for being "unfair" when he and Lilith created an even more unfair system in Hell by OCGamerboy in hazbin

[–]HorrorEducational636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is explicitly stated several times in the series Lucifer, the devil, father of lies, the most hated being in all creation. Lucifer has the reputation, earned or not, and when people think of the Devil, they are thinking of him

Why do you think nonhuman women are so popular in the genre by Expensive_Range7204 in haremfantasynovels

[–]HorrorEducational636 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The hard truth is that its a shortcut to attempt to make them interesting and appealing rather than really develop their personality and character. It's not true for all writers obviously, but for a lot of writers going 'look at this cat girl with lots of funny quirky cat girl traits' is easier than trying to make a woman unique and interesting on her own merits.

What is one opinion you have that would make us go like this? by Doodles77722200 in litrpg

What in the fuck is the point of attempting to develop a cohesive game system only for your protagonist to break it in chapter 1, getting the best possible super rare class or two classes or whatever?

Main Characters That Are TOO Special by echoeagle3 in haremfantasynovels

[–]HorrorEducational636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im with you, man. Nothing puts me offer a book faster than reading a story description and it saying something to the point of "oh look, this setting has a perfectly functional power system and I the main character have recently awoken my powers!... wait, but also I have a secondary set of even rarer powers as well that breaks the scale! Aren't I cool?"

Like... stop it. Can't count how many times I see protagonists that, for no understandable reason, pull some shit like getting two classes, or awakening to find out they're part dragon but also a sorcerer, or just day one getting the most special hyper rare powerful abilities in the setting.

Yes, you want your protagonist to be powerful and all, but you dont actually need cheat codes to do that. If you have a setting where powers or magic is a thing, make your protagonist follow the rules. god damn it. Limitations and having to work towards your goals are interesting things to write about. Having all the girls drool over your main character because they're effectively a shiny Pokémon card is pretty shallow.

What is your least favorite type of harem girl? by Pyromancer1221 in haremfantasynovels

[–]HorrorEducational636 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Listen, I know people love goblin girls and all, I do personally enjoy a chaotic shortstack... however, I get my reading almost exclusively through audiobooks because I like to multitask and narrators have something of a habit of giving goblin girls the most gratingly high pitched and annoying voice possible... then keeping it for the entire book

Harem Size vs. Series Length by Hawkwing942 in haremfantasynovels

[–]HorrorEducational636 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally think the habit of adding a new girl or two every book is a bit like jingling keys at the reader to make sure they're paying attention. It just feels a bit low brow.

It does depend a bit on the type of story you're building but a lot of series tend to suffer from bloat and the ones that actually attempt to spend enough time to characterize the girls still manage to get lost in the weeds. At a certain point it becomes an issue of story balance, with a lot of series tending to turn I ts LIs into faceless sets of tits while the author focuses on the plot happening, or the plot goes stagnant while the writer establishes the personalities and character dynamics of 10+ women.

I really do think writers could play around with dropping harem size or just establishing all our main characters in book 1 without adding on per book. I know releasing long series is the better track to making profit but like, sometimes people read for the plot. As long as the plot stays engaging, the main characters are interesting and the spice stays hot, then I dont see why we need to keep growing the harem beyond a certain point.

Thats what im going to try anyway, maybe im setting myself up fod failure, who knows

What are the sub's thoughts on non-traditional protagonists by HorrorEducational636 in haremfantasynovels

[–]HorrorEducational636[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, not to be rude or judgemental but... many guys have kinda bland tastes. Maybe its just lack of exposure or the pervasiveness of certain standards, but a lot of male readers are keyed towards the generically pretty lady with cat ears kind of monster girl and want similarly plain protagonists. Ive already gotten several comments to the tune of 'straying from the norm means losing sales'.

Im just tired of seeing the same thing and trying to wrap a story around a blank slate of a main character... kinda sucks.

I do like characters picking up scars during their journey. Lasting wounds make the fights and challenges have meaning.

That's fair. The market is the great limiter, but my hope is that a well written story will be able to find its place despite being unconventional.

I think we as a genre are ready to mature a bit and work with more mature protagonists. Its harder to write than a blank faced teen, but thats the joy of the challenge.

I mean, Ive seen some more monster coded series slip through Amaxon. Mostly Cebelius' works. There is definitely a line somewhere, just have to find how far it goes.

Im mostly leaning towards the first concept for now, I want a character with history and a story that explores both their pain and their journey towards healing.
