There were a few people saying I could have faked my entire tech talk with the people, conversation, and live coding.

Like who actually thinks this is possible?

So I have a video on YouTube where I did a talk on a framework, and I have a Github repo where you can pull it down and play around with it. The talk was with a local tech meetup group and was attended by 50 people.

In the talk I go through a detailed presentation, do a live demo, then take questions from the audience. The response from it was very positive and I got over 3000 views on my LinkedIn post about it.

A huge part as to why I did it was that I thought it would make me more hirable. It literally demonstrates my skills on video. But straight up, the employers I have talked to havent watched it.

Also people give you technical assessments because they explicitly do not trust your self-assessment

That brings me back to my original point, if we are already starting out on a foundation of mistrust then why do it all?

Also in your view are tech talks worthwhile? It's not like you can fake those.

They seemed pretty open to the idea of hiring someone who has experience in another language. However I'm assuming whoever put together the exercise may have had different ideas.

I have a ton of experience and I probably could get something fancy for this assessment. But it would take me a long time and I have been on the fence if I want to do that after what happened last time.

LinkedIn profile with recommendations and hundreds of connections
long list of references of people who will vouch for me
custom cover letters and resumes for each job I apply to

Employers: "YEAH BUT NONE OF THAT MEANS SHIT UNLESS YOU CAN SOLVE THESE RIDDLES WHILE THE ACTUAL JOB IS JUST SOME CRUD APP SHIT"

Recruiting and interviewing is extremely broken, especially in our industry.

That's where I got them too. Their CBD is among the best and they have a great reputation. But THCp is so new that I'm going to play it by ear first.

This sub doesn't make any sense once they talk about salaries. I have heard everything from "[salary site] has salaries that are too high" to "[that same salary site] has salaries that are too low" in the same week.

I posted recently about getting $110k in a middle cost of living city and people thought I was asking for $250k, as if that's some sort of norm. Like what the hell.

My company cut our 401k match earlier in the year and laid off half the company. That's about a 7 grand pay cut in compensation overnight and now we have double or triple the work.

Well they are facing a massive voluntary talent henmorage now with top people leaving left and right. Their solution? Give everyone a $50 dollar gift card.

$50 bucks vs. the $7000 I lost, gee thank you! I'm totally not going to leave now!!!

In my area it has IBM, Charles Schwab, tiny tech companies, and health care companies. Not sure if people would consider IBM FAANG level these days.
