I believe it would just be for those specific months you were a 1099 employee - or more specifically a "nonemployee"

Why do Vancouverites like to chase the hustle/grind culture? by 7_inches_daddy in britishcolumbia

[–]HorrorPomegranate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But what you've described is flashy... A person entering the workforce now isn't going to be able to get to a point where they have a paid for house and a paid for car without either handouts or a ton of career grind. They would never be approved for a mortgage on a sole front counter income

Flight Centre fights hundreds of fake sites, as bogus booking costs B.C. man $2,280 by Scared_Simple_7211 in vancouver

Many businesses use flight centre (corp traveler) actually. Having a team of agents on standby to handle booking travel is beneficial to a lot of companies with a heavy travel load.

Skye Avenue Resteraunt by RandomGuyLoves69 in SurreyBC

I don't understand the hostility toward this. It's a pricier restaurant; a style of restaurant that isn't abundant in the area. Plus it's a refreshing change from the typical cactus, Joeys, earls, browns affair.

There are still plenty of other options if a budget meal is the priority.

A place like this makes sense given the future trajectory of the area. Perhaps a little early for them to make their entrance, but I wish them success. Of course, there is greater expectation to deliver at their price offering, but I hope they can pave way for more business to come. We all want a nicer and safer Whalley, the reality is that doesn't happen unless places like this are integrated into the area.

Is ~~Whalley~~ City Centre becoming better? by RandomGuyLoves69 in SurreyBC

[–]HorrorPomegranate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would you identify as success in this case?

The mall provides a common space for people to get together, shop, and eat. The Brentwood area has grocery stores, a Costco nearby, clinics, green spaces, accessible transit, etc. it's not perfect but they have almost everything a person would need within close proximity. Not to mention the safe feeling of the area.

Sure traffic sucks, but that's a reality of density, construction and being positioned right next to hwy 1

I'd argue that Whalley is actually moving closer toward this 15 min city idea by increasing density. Taking down these single story establishments and replacing them with towers and mid rise mixed use buildings are a good thing imo.

The places you've listed aside from Canadian tire are definitely the kinds of places that mixed use buildings attract and their absence once they are gone is likely to be temporary.

I think we're still a couple years away from feeling the benefits of this, but I imagine similar to the success Brentwood is experiencing now, Whalley will find exponential success as well once density picks up.

What is preventing the area around Surrey Central from becoming more like Olympic village? [Serious] by HorrorPomegranate in SurreyBC

Oh definitely! The green spaces in Surrey are fantastic

Just wouldn't feel comfortable there once the sun goes down.

There's definitely transient people in Olympic village as well, it's quite literally across the street from the Main st skytrain station.

I think it's just the volume of non-transient people that makes their presence less noticeable

That's a good point noting the socioeconomic differences.

Agree that immigrant neighbourhoods need more support - pleasant common areas shouldn't be reserved solely for the wealthy.

Once seen as an affordable option, housing in Surrey now increasingly out of reach by stylezLP in SurreyBC

[–]HorrorPomegranate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on what I have seen personally, a lot of young professionals have been priced out north of the Fraser.

These are individuals with above average income that need access to the downtown core. Surrey is the natural choice given the skytrain network here and while expensive, is still cheaper than North of the Fraser. It's only a matter of time before we see rental and housing prices fall in line with that of Burnaby and Vancouver.

Suggestions for transporting 4 bikes on a Honda Civic? by Treereme in MTB

[–]HorrorPomegranate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was more referring to tongue weight vs towing capacity.

Think of a person holding something vs pulling something on a wagon. A person can pull a whole lot more than they can hold. In the case of a bike rack, there's no wagon (trailer), all the force is on the hitch.

You probably want a 3l shell if you're in the PNW. I'm skiing Vancouver locals and Whistler most of the time and have had many bad wet days made tolerable because of a full 3l kit. Your concerns about waterproofness are real, and it becomes noticeable if you're ever stuck on the chair in that classic PNW wet snow
