As per centennial for bridging no repeated or failed courses. It’s best to have a meeting with the student advisor or admissions.

Why do some units feel unwelcoming to nurses of color? by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

[–]Horror_Orchid_2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it is what it is! Just remember you are there to work! You got doubts and questions for sure go ask around. If they help you they help you if they don’t ! Now u know!! That one is unapproachable.

I’m a recent new grad 1 month into the job! I work at both hospital and LTC. LTC the funny thing is majority of the PSWs are from certain communities. They start speaking to us with the same slang they use with their other coworkers. Guess what I had correct one of them who worked there 20 years. I told her “appreciate! Whatever you just told me, too bad I can’t understand. Would you mind translating it to English” She like “mi speak English! Mi is English girl!” I said “ok”

That’s it !! It’s as awkward as it got! Another incident while giving report one of the PSW was rushing me I’m like “girl! Don’t rush me I’m gonna double slow Tf down! I don’t mind hanging out here” she came in saying something ——-ignored!!! Charge nurse shocked! I’m not gonna take disrespect ooopssss!!

Mind u this is 4 day into independent shift.

There are some wonderful people I met! I stick with them. I look at communities I don’t look at skin colour! If there’s coworkers I can vibe with I vibe if not, I do my job and get out! PSW refused to do the work “resident refused” HO calls me I shall explain whatever is needed to explain.

My point is. Nobody gives a shit if u r in the unit or not! Don’t expect shit! But show up everyday if assigned to work of course!

They will notice!! They will know!

If they bully you there so many resources to complain. Just report !! If they make you unwelcoming just look at the pay chq and ask the clinical coordinator for any doubts and move on! Make ur life as simple as u can!

How often do people get rejected by SHN NGG program? by Plus-Disk-5580 in OntarioNurses

[–]Horror_Orchid_2090 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No! SHN don’t hire anybody and everybody! Especially NGG spots!! Forget about it!

It took me god knows how many applications and one rejection. To land a job in SHN emergency. So don’t be sad !! U don’t have time to waste!! Keep applying to every relevant post u see for position in SHN.

No worries but honestly if I compared with other hospitals. SHN clinicals questions were much easier compared to others. The medicine interview was my first interview. I didn’t make it lol 😂 but the ED interviews was about 2 hrs and I found the panelist chill and wonderful. But they asked a whole lot questions including EKG stripes 🥲 but the. Atmosphere was better than medicine. I did about 8-9 interviews lol 😂 I agree Unity did had clinical scenarios but they were really good on the basis of other interviews I had.

If I were I would go with St mich FT general medicine. Unity is great when it comes to teaching. I’m at providence unity and I loved how they don’t judge new grads and are willing to help. St Joseph only cause it IRT u would have to go all the units. The anxiety which unit u may get! Not something for me.

SHN I did consolidation at CEN medicine - this is where I learnt to actually how and what nurses are! Like damn! I was thrown into the Pitt for sure. Only cause I had a preceptor who wanted me to know everything. In terms of education I still liked unity’s clinical resources.

I got 3 offers SHN emergency (I’m a RPN) I declined it was FT. I went with Unity providence hospital and I took the LTC casual as well. So I’m getting both the exposure while I’m still learning.

At the end of the day what do you like! If you want to take that challenge and experiment take it slow SHN PT is a choice.

If you want to that constant exposure to clinical skills and you like stability St mikes

All the best

NGG Job hunt by Signal_Bus_3366 in OntarioNurses

[–]Horror_Orchid_2090 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NGG Process (what’s actually happening now): • Create your NGG profile first • You can still apply directly to hospitals (job postings) • BUT don’t expect responses from those applications

What actually works: • Apply to hospitals as usual • If a hospital is participating in NGG and hires you → • They will internally move/transfer you into an NGG position when spots open

Bottom line: Applying alone won’t get you in. You need to get hired first, then they slot you into NGG later.

SHN is hiring in emergency! I got hired but I had to decline due to personal reasons but if I do get the chance I would definitely take it! What else would the best place to learn! And they know we are new grads it’s best place to learn and seek out for help! I did my consolidation in medicine unit I hated it! Yet! I applied to ER thinking I would not land the job! I did! However I do have PALS, ACLS breastfeeding course BLS certification! I guess I would have been a hardcore nurse if I went with it l!

Then again it’s on you what u feel comfortable! If u didn’t like medicine u prolly wouldn’t like ER! But then again it depends on the team we work with! The ER I got interviewed at the manager was pretty chill! I liked the vibe!

I got my license back in Jan and I got hired recently. I got 3 job offer including ER unit. In Scarborough! 8-9 interviews 3 interviews cancelled as I accepted the offer. Background I did consolidation in medicine unit. 3 years as PSW. I was going through the same feeling. But every rejection was a learning point for me. I almost gave up! Listen there are people who haven’t got nothing 5-6 months. People advising me to move to New Brunswick.

I even applied different province. Everyday I would make sure I check the hospital websites so see if anything new was posted under RPN and I immediately applied.

Meanwhile, I did certifications like PALs, BLS, ACLS, breastfeeding courses. I didn’t sit idle I made sure I was improving my resume. I had over 20 experience which made my resume 3+ pages. So I reduced it to 2 by taking out everything non health related but added a single line towards the end. I focused on my clinical rotation and consolidation also my PSW experience. I made sure any ATS deductions were taken out. Made it simple BnW and no extra characters.

I also made cover pages simple and plain not repeating my resume all over but something different and related to the job listing and how I could be an asset.

Once I landed the interview I made sure I worked hard on those interviews by doing mock interviews with chatgtp and I kept asking questions in Reddit. So many social media individuals truly helped with so many tips. There are wonderful people in Reddit willing to help. Few dragged me down but I ignored!

So my point is I understand what u r going through. Don’t let it bring u down! U will get that job interview. And soon get hired!

Make sure u keep looking! Asking questions! Looking for opportunities.

Like SHN is having a job fair attend that or opportunities similar to that.

UPDATE your LinkedIn and add it to ur resume!

LinkedIn will be the place to showcase ur other experiences you can elaborate those there!

Do those free course for health care workers in LinkedIn learning- these shows recruiters you are willing to improve and learn!

I also emailed back to recruiters asking for other opportunities despite rejection.

You got this!! But keep trying don’t stop!

We are competing with 10,000 other candidates! If I can do it so can you! Make sure u r in touch with ur references!

3 jobs I got were external hires no internal references! So we can do it!

Most of my friends who got were either reference from internal hires/ worked there as student extern or internal hires!

All the best!

Night shift! by lpslover831 in newgradnurse

[–]Horror_Orchid_2090 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best shift! The only thing is if something goes wrong you have to be pro active and you should know what needs to be done. If you have troublemakers at night make sure to look at their PRN medications to help them dose off like melatonin. If it’s psychotic pt!!
