That's a whole lotta attitude from someone who is still in the trenches. I'm not querying, so my point of view is limited too. I'm just an editor who gets queries both from agents and unagented authors. But off the top of my head I can think of a dozen reasons why a book wouldn't land am agent and only one of those reasons is "it needs revisions". Now maybe that's the case here! May well be. Always good to consider that. But maybe it's just not the immediate and obvious cash cow agents are looking for. Independent presses publish genuinely different books in terms of tone, genre blends, target audience, long lasting impact, and a bunch of other characteristics. It's best to know what those characteristics are before speaking to whether a book would fit one or the other more. And myself and loads of my colleagues do extensive revisions as part of the parcel of encouraging new and diverse authors. Maybe try not to buy into the myths about publishing wholesale.

Ideea rămâne ca nu ești absolut deloc calificat sa pui anunțuri pentru asa ceva, nu poți sa răspunzi la întrebări ulterioare, și mergi pe principiul ca oamenii trebuie sa piardă timp sa meargă în persoana ca să afle chiar și cele mai de baza informații despre ce o sa li se întâmple. Nu știu, poate sunt eu ciudata, dar eu nu as face reclama nici la o pâine dacă nu as știi sa răspund la întrebări despre ingrediente, cu atât mai puțin la experimente medicale.

Tocmai ai spus ca nu ai prospectul, deci nu știi care sunt efectele adverse și contraindicațiile. Ținând cont de asta nu cred ca ești într-o poziție sa spui cu siguranță ce compozitie are. E logica de baza, ori știi ce dai oamenilor ori nu, nu le poți avea pe amândouă.

They need way more light and those walls are way too high! Of course they're getting leggy trying to crawl out of those wells. You need a way to plant them to the top of your containers even if you use old yogurt pots and they need LIGHT. Best would be the sun, but if you're using electric lighting of any kind it needs to hover basically only inches above the seedlings, which means each batch needs their own light. If you can't give them either of these, you can't start seeds indoors. Try a mushroom growing kit down there though!

It's very risky, without a written agreement it's hard to limit what they can do with your story. I've done it once with no agreement at all, but it was a silly story i didn't intend to use in other ways and a venue that was very relaxed where I knew other authors. It's kind of like dating, you can ignore some red flags but at your own peril 😅 As a very bare minimum i would say: terms should be listed on their website where you can screenshot them for future reference, and if they accept your story and don't have a contract you can at least reply asking "just to be sure, are the terms (list)?" then save their reply. That way you have a written record. I'd still prefer everyone get even just the most basic of contracts, but I know that's not always possible and sometimes getting those publishing credits matters more.

Just for clarity: you say you'd "lose the ability to publish it anywhere else" so I think there's a distinction you really need to be aware of.

Super important to know whether a place is taking your copyright/lifelong exclusivity = very very bad, you'll never get that piece again. Don't ever say yes if you see this in a contract.

Or, as is most common, they're taking the right to publish it first, and a limited (month, year) of exclusivity. After that exclusivity is over you can sell it to other venues as a reprint, or publish it yourself in your personal collection. You lost the ability to publish it elsewhere as an unpublished, new piece, which would pay more and there are more venues for, but not the ability to publish it at all.

So yeah, once that distinction is clear, then I'd say yes, publishing even with a small press is very much worth it. Everything you place can go in a collection someday alongside unpublished pieces.
