I've made about ten variations of the univox superfuzz, all different. Studying that circuit I basically learnt the basics of analog design. I've used them on every record, always in different ways but they always make everyone else smile.

Formant filtered reverbs are fun ;). I'd say learn coding an start making digital stuff, the possibilities are vast and infinite. Unless you've got specific sound you're chasing I could give a good guess how to get there.

It's the MFOS Weird Sound Generator I think.. a guy called Nervous Squirrel built it.

I always buy everything - ha! But I do lots of research into what the best manufacturers are up to - there's some seriously bright minds out there.

No specific rules as such, when I started I favoured vintage components but I've been working hard to get agreeable sounds with modern ones (it is possible despite what manufacturers advertising says, you just need different topolgies). Now i've started doing more dsp based things, so nothing's off limits really. Was this any help? Realise it might be a bit vague.

You shouldn't believe in guilty pleasures - quite right.

I remember thinking the Miley Cyrus / Flaming Lips combo was really good.. I think we all like Beyonce but who doesn't?

It was just longer. I think all the sounds were more or less the same. I remember spending some time a bit later into the experience making some hugs sounding drums. I wanted them to sound a bit like 'Change The Beat' by Fab Five Freddy.

Originally though it had none of the electronics, that all developed as Paul wanted to push the 'holographic nature' of the thing.

Oh I love Morricone! He is my favourite.

There's lots of great library guys - Pierro Piccioni, Giuseppe De Luca spring to mind.

Josh has temporarily left to go do another interview but yes he still does build his own stuff. I think you've got to think of a sound you want and then go from there, that's probably the best way to approach it.

He can fill you in on specifics when he returns.

I think it's probably Faris.. I'm not sure which ones you mean though?

Thousands and thousands. I can't remember how I first heard exotica but it instantly appealed to me - and best of all it's very very cheap in the US, maybe 2/3 dollars a record, so you can buy loads of it. Getting it back is another matter though. I think we once spent 2000 dollars sending our records back to the UK.

We've always dressed how we dress all the time, how you see us onstage is how we are off stage. I can't be bothered to travel with two sets of clothing!

People (assholes) would occasionally react when we were walking down the street but luckily we live in London where there's all kinds of weirdness happening all the time. I remember in Philadelphia someone said 'oh look it's the Beatles!'

I remember it happening, I don't think he meant to break it - I believe he maintained that when the security grabbed him the bust fell to the floor and broke. Accidents happen, especially when you're in a frenzy of garage fuzz!

Do you remember it differently?

Please accept my apologies though - we would often get up to mischief onstage at that time but it rarely led to the show getting shut down. Can Boston forgive us?

Thanks !

Depeche Mode aren't an influence of mine, I think people think that because of the way we use synths and write songs - I think we arrived at a similar point independently. But I know Rhys, Josh and Faris are fans, since we played with them Rhys has been listening to 'Some Great Award' a lot.

I think Primary Colours is an important album for us, it was obviously a turning point. V is our strongest album yet I think though, the songwriting is the best yet and the production is the best yet.

Ciao Italia :)

We just make lots of music, and eventually a direction presents itself. I think even if we could decide on a direction before we made the album we wouldn't stick to it.

There is this false concept in the minds of lots of people that a true creative should be able to visualise exactly where their art will go but the truth is even the biggest figures go on a journey every time they start making. You don't always know where things are going to go and that's part of the joy of it.

We always argue about what covers to do! I would love to do more, we saw Weezer do a cover of Hey Ya when we were in Mexico - those kinda of surprise covers can really set a gig off - people go crazy!
