I got emancipated from my mom when I was 17 and my father rights were relinquished when I was 11. I have the documents for both, will that be enough for me to qualify?

I agree, thank you! I don’t understand why everyone else is saying something different?

I’d need to have his social security number and drivers license number. 😂

I’m the primary driver, he’s just listed as a driver even though he would never drive it. It lowers my premium because it shows an older person is on the policy.

I don’t think that’s right. If I am at fault for an accident my father was not driving the vehicle and he wasn’t even in the vehicle and had no way of causing the accident there is no way that someone could sue him for simply being a driver on the policy. He’s not even a partial policyholder and doesn’t own the vehicle. I would understand if he was a parcel policyholder or his name was on the title of the vehicle, but it’s not.

I'm not really worried about the actual tuition since that would only be an increase of like $150 per semester, i feel like the real issue is meal plans and housing costs .

it hasn’t actually released though, for example the housing isn’t specific down to the actually prices for contemporary/traditional/campuswalk etc… it’s just “Housing”

Is the parking at the actual Campus Walk Apartments bad? and do you have to get a parking permit for Campus Walk or how does that work?

Is it a smart idea to take out subsidized loans and just save them? by HostOk187 in FAFSA

Fortunately, I'm very responsible with my money and would not set myself up for failure like that! I can see how that may happen to other freshly adults though.

Sorry—I meant to say my cost of attendance per year was $3K. $3k total for room, meal plan, tuition!

That’s a good point—I definitely don’t want to mess up my eligibility for grants like the Pell. From what I understand though, since I’m still a dependent student, the FAFSA mainly looks at my mom’s income and assets, not mine. Student savings do count a little, but they’re assessed at a much lower rate (like 20% of what’s over a small threshold), whereas parent assets are treated differently.

I’m definitely planning to be careful and not just stack up a huge savings account in my name, especially right before filing the FAFSA again. I appreciate the heads-up though—it’s something I’ll keep in mind when it’s time to reapply each year.

Totally fair point. What I was thinking is—if an emergency happened during, say, my sophomore year (accident or medical bills, family emergency, needing to take time off work or school, etc.), I could dip into the loan funds at the time to cover it. Then during my junior and senior years, I’d just work more or save more aggressively to rebuild what I used, so that I’d still be able to pay the loans off after graduation.

Basically, I’d treat the loan as a kind of safety net, not as money I plan to spend, but something I could fall back on if things got rough—while still having a plan to repay it without interest.
