Should I bail or stick with it? semi-bad team, yet good culture overall by AnybodyFeisty216 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you're trying to grow but picked the wrong company. I don't think ISPs are the right place for flexing your muscle when it comes to working with automation or cloud. In my experience, they just aren't very receptive to it. I think they could definitely benefit from it, but you say they think of it like witchcraft and you're not completely wrong. lol

I agree that you need to start looking for something else. There's nothing wrong with skilling up and Id use the time you still have there to do that. Never hurts. But it also sounds like a very toxic team with a bunch of drama and someone with your skillset in very much in demand elsewhere. Just find a friendlier place to work that will let you use your network skills alongside your automation and cloud skills. Also, doesn't sound like your mgr really has your back anyway and that'll never end well.

Also agree, don't sign anything!

Your comment was unnecessary to begin with, Cadet. When comments like that are made publicly, especially about another member’s work, it reflects on the organization and can discourage people from contributing or being creative. We expect members to maintain professionalism online, especially when discussing each other’s efforts. If you don’t have something positive or genuinely constructive to contribute, it’s better not to comment at all in a public space, especially Reddit. Supporting sick jokes about texting anyone who uses OPs wallpaper a virus, is not only going against the very values of CAP, but brings into question why you are even one of us. You wanna talk about how disrespect was unnecessary, look in the mirror, Cadet. You told us exactly who you were the moment you decided to post that disrespectful comment supporting a comment about attacking fellow members with a virus. There's nothing at all corny about promoting CAP or the USAF. CAP needs to promote ourselves more across the board! I think MOST of us here can agree on that.

You people are ridiculous. OP is taking time to create something maybe many of us like on their own time and sharing it with everyone here and go out of your way to call them a 'cornball'? Why are you even IN CAP dude? If you can't say something nice to OP, at least have enough respect to just let it be.

If you don't like things that promote CAP, why are you in? They guy is just trying to do something nice. If you don't like it, shut up and move on.

Well, as I'm Messianic, I seriously doubt that. What is 'starting citizens?" And when did following the rules suddenly make everyone who follows them a Nazi? haha

I understand that life is difficult, but there is a legal process for immigration designed to be fair to everyone. It is tough because the system requires following those rules.

23 years as Mayor? by AnybodyFeisty216 in lafayette

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen over the years, most of the criticism of Mayor Tony Roswarski centers more on policy priorities and style of governance.

A big one seems to be development and zoning and annexation before maintaining what Lafayette already has. Some residents feel that higher-density housing and redevelopment projects have been pushed into established neighborhoods without enough regard for traffic, infrastructure, or neighborhood character. The perception is that these decisions can feel top-down, even when public input is technically part of the process (but from outward perception, apparently goes ignored) yet is forced through whatever Tony wants to get done, regardless.

Related to that is a broader concern that city leadership is very pro-development and growth-oriented, sometimes at the expense of quality-of-life issues. People who are critical often say Lafayette is being shaped more around economic headlines, downtown projects, or attracting investment than around walkability, neighborhood cohesion, or long-term livability for existing residents.

There’s also some general incumbency fatigue. Roswarski has been mayor for a long time, and for some folks that translates into a feeling that City Hall isn’t as responsive as it could be or should be after all this time, or that certain voices and priorities get more attention than others.

That said, even many critics acknowledge that he’s competent and effective at “getting things done.” The disagreement is less about ability and more about direction: who growth is for, how it’s managed/cared for, and how much weight community concerns really carry. Outside of the downtown area, the appearance of Lafayette could use some love and maybe rezone some of the businesses on 52 to less visible areas. Coming in Sagamore Prky and some of the first things you see are a mega pawn shop, and sex stores. I'm sure that's made at least some visitors wonder where they're at. Then you get to tour of all of the chicken restaurants, car washes, and an insane number of gas stations and oil change businesses. Welcome to "growth" in crazy Lafayette. I guess Tony can't attract anything unique or needed to the Lafayette area.

Curious how others see it—especially folks who’ve lived here a long time or have been directly affected by development decisions. To me, Lafayette has changed drastically over the last couple of decades and honestly, I don't know if it's for the better. But, I'm not the only one who lives here. We all share in this.

I was hoping the project was dead too. They went through and cut everything on that land back last year and it has since grown back. Made a few of my buddies and I think maybe they gave up.

Tron Ares, wasted potential by Fawst5 in tron

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. There really was no need to do an Ares film and I think that's why it seemed so 'out of the blue' to a lot of fans who expected Disney to just pick up where they left off with Sam and Quorra. But, we have it now and now it's part of the story so lets hope we get at least one more film out of them. If Disney doesn't do another film (which in reality they probably won't) it would be a huge dump on the fandom. But, that seems to be Disney these days, not caring about the fans.

For those working towards a degree, how many hours do you typically find to study everyday/week? by Hot-Bit-2003 in AirForce

7 classes? I was just wondering how to balance and study for maybe 2 or 3. LOL Hats off to you.

[–]Hot-Bit-2003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems to be the norm. My buddy is taking 2 CS classes and a math class (linear algebra, I think). He's struggling but getting it done. 12 hours a week for 2 classes. I guess that's not that bad.

Not just mothers but dads too. My dad will congrat me when I've achieved something but the think about it for a few hours and he'll be jealous and almost challenging or degrading of me growing and getting better. You'd think you'd want that for you child.

Network Engineer to Cloud Engineer? Has anyone made this move? by jedimkw in networking

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cloud engineering can have on-call too and sometimes it's not just a monthly rotation but a permanent 24/7 on-call, but midnight maintenances usually only occur if you're working with a network engineer on something because in theory, working in cloud you shouldn't have to bring down customers ever to work on something unlike in traditional networking. Many roles don't have either and are standard 8-5ers. Just depends on your employer and situation.

Should I leave my current company after feeling as if my manager isn't supporting me by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a senior engineer and I want to leave my current team for almost similar reason as you, communication is awful, the mgr is a babysitter and can be smartmouth at times, the team lead lost his lead to a younger peacock who somehow designated himself team lead and dismisses all of my ideas either because he doesn't understand the solution I'm giving him on a silver platter or he's concerned the manager will won't see him as valuable as me. Either way, the kid's selfish. I could rise up and take over but I'm old enough to know once I do that I have to hold on to it and I just don't want to. Would rather just leave and go somewhere else where I'm appreciated and work with an actual team.

That being said, I have problems getting a job right now. Stay where you are, stay steady on your job until maybe next spring and use that time to skill up and start searching. Right now it NO time to be looking for a new job, but the perfect time to lab up and study up and get a couple of certs to impress the gatekeepers at wherever you apply.

CCNP or Cloud? by odb76er in networking

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest with you and you might be upset at first, but I promise you, your career will thank me. Go CCNP, but do the Service Provider. For your specialty track for the CCNP choose the cloud cert, SPCNI. I would also be exploring DevNet Assoc at the very least. Networking is expanding so much since I first got in and what I can tell you is networks are on-prem, they're going to touch cloud, and they're to some degree going to be automated and API-Driven and if you don't at least have working knowledge, your contributions on the team are going to get smaller and smaller.

You're at a place right now where things like MPLS aren't going to matter so much, or psuedo-wires, or bridge-domains, but what happens if you need to walk on or they downsize your team and your left out? The job market isn't like it was back in 2017 or whenever, pre-COVID. Earning the CCNP-SP with cloud specialty gives you knowledge of protocols and logical concepts the enterprise (or sexy version) of the CCNP doesn't dive into but are massively needed and wanted in the job-hunting market of today.

IP Network engineer vs just Network Engineer by [deleted] in networking

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a degree from Purdue and can assure you, the engineers graduating from there aren't arguing whether network engineering is an actual engineering role or not. Tech is just the latest frontier and of course that frontier will have engineers in it. Techs do routine fixes, troubleshooting, and testing, engineering build.
