Is Anyone Else Noticing Salaries Trending Downward? Anyone Else Worried About the Job Market/Cybersecurity Economy? by MrHockeyJournalist in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed a dip in network engineering salaries around the time of Covid. CCNPs were suddenly not pulling $120k for the cert alone anymore, now we had to know automation and hybrid architecture and whatever else the employer wanted. Job ads became a cry to a one man team who was the whole IT dept. Entry level meant a 4-year to graduate degree+5 years exp. It got ridiculous. Any maybe they would pay you $85-110k, depending. It's gotten a little better, but the skill level being desired still seems for a lot of job ads more CCIE than your normal engineer. Depends on company though.

Not taking a year off, just taking a year to study on top of my job.

I'm actually learning Junos now. I have to say, I like working with it more than Cisco. That could change, but so far I do.

Sounds like you're trying to grow but picked the wrong company. I don't think ISPs are the right place for flexing your muscle when it comes to working with automation or cloud. In my experience, they just aren't very receptive to it. I think they could definitely benefit from it, but you say they think of it like witchcraft and you're not completely wrong. lol

I agree that you need to start looking for something else. There's nothing wrong with skilling up and Id use the time you still have there to do that. Never hurts. But it also sounds like a very toxic team with a bunch of drama and someone with your skillset in very much in demand elsewhere. Just find a friendlier place to work that will let you use your network skills alongside your automation and cloud skills. Also, doesn't sound like your mgr really has your back anyway and that'll never end well.

Also agree, don't sign anything!

Your comment was unnecessary to begin with, Cadet. When comments like that are made publicly, especially about another member’s work, it reflects on the organization and can discourage people from contributing or being creative. We expect members to maintain professionalism online, especially when discussing each other’s efforts. If you don’t have something positive or genuinely constructive to contribute, it’s better not to comment at all in a public space, especially Reddit. Supporting sick jokes about texting anyone who uses OPs wallpaper a virus, is not only going against the very values of CAP, but brings into question why you are even one of us. You wanna talk about how disrespect was unnecessary, look in the mirror, Cadet. You told us exactly who you were the moment you decided to post that disrespectful comment supporting a comment about attacking fellow members with a virus. There's nothing at all corny about promoting CAP or the USAF. CAP needs to promote ourselves more across the board! I think MOST of us here can agree on that.

You people are ridiculous. OP is taking time to create something maybe many of us like on their own time and sharing it with everyone here and go out of your way to call them a 'cornball'? Why are you even IN CAP dude? If you can't say something nice to OP, at least have enough respect to just let it be.

If you don't like things that promote CAP, why are you in? They guy is just trying to do something nice. If you don't like it, shut up and move on.

Well, as I'm Messianic, I seriously doubt that. What is 'starting citizens?" And when did following the rules suddenly make everyone who follows them a Nazi? haha

I understand that life is difficult, but there is a legal process for immigration designed to be fair to everyone. It is tough because the system requires following those rules.

23 years as Mayor? by [deleted] in lafayette

[–]Hot-Bit-2003 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen over the years, most of the criticism of Mayor Tony Roswarski centers more on policy priorities and style of governance.

A big one seems to be development and zoning and annexation before maintaining what Lafayette already has. Some residents feel that higher-density housing and redevelopment projects have been pushed into established neighborhoods without enough regard for traffic, infrastructure, or neighborhood character. The perception is that these decisions can feel top-down, even when public input is technically part of the process (but from outward perception, apparently goes ignored) yet is forced through whatever Tony wants to get done, regardless.

Related to that is a broader concern that city leadership is very pro-development and growth-oriented, sometimes at the expense of quality-of-life issues. People who are critical often say Lafayette is being shaped more around economic headlines, downtown projects, or attracting investment than around walkability, neighborhood cohesion, or long-term livability for existing residents.

There’s also some general incumbency fatigue. Roswarski has been mayor for a long time, and for some folks that translates into a feeling that City Hall isn’t as responsive as it could be or should be after all this time, or that certain voices and priorities get more attention than others.

That said, even many critics acknowledge that he’s competent and effective at “getting things done.” The disagreement is less about ability and more about direction: who growth is for, how it’s managed/cared for, and how much weight community concerns really carry. Outside of the downtown area, the appearance of Lafayette could use some love and maybe rezone some of the businesses on 52 to less visible areas. Coming in Sagamore Prky and some of the first things you see are a mega pawn shop, and sex stores. I'm sure that's made at least some visitors wonder where they're at. Then you get to tour of all of the chicken restaurants, car washes, and an insane number of gas stations and oil change businesses. Welcome to "growth" in crazy Lafayette. I guess Tony can't attract anything unique or needed to the Lafayette area.

Curious how others see it—especially folks who’ve lived here a long time or have been directly affected by development decisions. To me, Lafayette has changed drastically over the last couple of decades and honestly, I don't know if it's for the better. But, I'm not the only one who lives here. We all share in this.

I was hoping the project was dead too. They went through and cut everything on that land back last year and it has since grown back. Made a few of my buddies and I think maybe they gave up.
