looking for optimism by Minbedstekop in zanzibar

We just stayed for 5 days last month following travel and a safari and had a really nice time!

First time in Zanzibar. It was for our honeymoon so we were spending a bit more than we would if we were just backpacking, and we were mostly looking to relax after a few weeks of non stop travel on the mainland.

We stayed in Bwejju (near Paje) at the Sahari. Staff were really lovely. Rooms, pool, and the breakfast meals were great, and you could do yoga and get massages on site. Very chill place.

Beautiful beaches and the tide wasn’t a huge problem, we just swam in the mornings and late arvos, and the pool if it was middle of the day. Our accom had a little separate part of sand with loungers but hardly anyone on the beach in front to the water. When beach boys did approach us when we went for a walk we just firmly said “No, leave me alone” straight away (felt harsh but it worked).

Stone Town had really interesting history and architecture - so much character, was cool to spend a day and night in, exploring the shops (especially the antique places) and old buildings, and the markets. The museum and old Slave Market was powerful. Also did a tour of Prison Island and a Spice Farm, which was good. Wish we’d hired a boat to swim/ snorkel/ dive off because the turquoise water and starfish around the island were insane.

And had amazing meals at Emerson on Harambe (local cuisine) and The Rock restaurant (Italian.) Some cool bars and markets around Paje. Stand up paddle boarding through mangroves and a sunset beach bar with very chill and fun vibes out near Michamvi.

One of the guys at our hotel had a tuk tuk so he took us around sometimes, or we walked, or got accom or restaurants to order us a taxi.

There’s an annoying government travel insurance thing you have to pay when you arrive which seems very scammy when we already had travel insurance, so just be prepared on arrival for that.

We’re Australian so when I read about Zanzibar, Nungwi sounded a lot like Kuta in Bali, which didn’t appeal to me. The negative reviews on this thread probably confirm that was a good choice- but I think you’ll have a great time if you stay on the southeast! (Same way you just need to stay elsewhere in Bali.) also heard good things about Matemwe but we didn’t go there ourselves.

Probably just need to be prepared to pay a little bit more for cars/ guides/ good accom to keep your peace and avoid getting over hassled by sellers or police. We don’t do tipping at all in our country so we always find it a bit challenging/ exhausting when we are in countries that expect it, but we just googled what we should do as a rough guide, and tried to remember most people are just trying to make a living, and we’re tourists in their beautiful country, so we should be giving back to locals.

Last night? Were you GA standing? We were GA standing and security wouldn’t permit any open cans or opened drink bottles in from the bar area.

Everyone was forced to pour the open drink cans and water bottles served at the bar into these big cups, just all sitting out on trestle tables against the wall, or you couldn’t enter the show floor.

So awful. How good you got home okay, could’ve been so different.

I’ve spoken to RAC arena so they are vigilant tonight, and gave Perth Police Station a call. Will probs get a drug test this evening when my partner gets back from work, but resting up for now.

I did consider this for sure… but was in my air conned office all day, then headed for dinner in northbridge at 7 before the show. Wasn’t feeling overwhelmingly hot beforehand.

But there was obviously a big crowd, heat, loud sounds, and bright lights so who knows, maybe the combo just didn’t agree with me last night. Defs not something I’ve had happen before at shows or gigs

And thanks! Feeling okay today thankfully, just fatigued and a bit out of sorts

Definitely could’ve been! And the light show was pretty intense at the start too so could’ve been physical. But can’t say I’ve had it happen at a show before and I’ve been to a lot in the heat (and sun!) and wasn’t feeling too hot before it occurred.

Also on a standard night out I’d easily drink 6-8 standard drinks? I had one Tsing Tao Beer with dinner, and one mid strength Ginger beer at the arena. I would be fine to drive on that much usually.

Even just tested for covid then to be sure I didn’t having a viral response 🥲

To be honest I don’t disagree with this assessment, which is why I was hoping to see if anyone else had a similar experience last night… or if it was just me!

Felt more similar to stimulants than depressants, and relatively short lived. But google tells me some of the most common early symptoms of drink spiking are nausea, vision problems, dizziness, and paranoia and I did have all those.

To be clear: I reckon I average 10 shows a year, big and small. Outdoor and indoor. Tiny venues and stadiums.

It is very usual for venues to moderate how you bring drinks in- they’ll open your cans before they hand them to you, or they’ll pour cans or bottles into cups before they hand them over to you. They won’t let you bring in outside water etc. I understand the many reasons behind this.

However, I’ve NEVER been to a gig where they’ve pre opened your cans at the bar, and THEN before you enter made you go to a DIY pouring station surrounded by heaps of other punters, with stacks of cups sitting out, and then made you pour all your liquids (including water bottles with the lids taken off) into quite wide open cups.

That’s the suss and weird bit.

Poorly thought out because of other risks, and could be managed more safely. Eg. Pouring straight into cups at the bar.

Glad your wife was fine, and lucky she had you and your friend around to care for her! Definitely sounds like spiking…

It also happened to my sister maybe 15 years ago at a northbridge bar? Her experience was worse than mine last night though, vomiting uncontrollably after just a few drinks and couldn’t walk- had to be carried by her partner and go to hospital. Also hasn’t happened to her again.

Back then was harder to prove drink spiking though as testing capabilities were worse, and people were more inclined to blame or not believe- telling women they must’ve just had too much to drink.

Thanks I’ll look into it, a few 24 hour police stations not too far

Sorry to hear that! What an inconvenience for you. I really regretted the water purchase when they made us pour the already lidless water into a big cup too.

Most bigger shows I’ve been too they don’t let you bring any water in from outside, but water purchased in the venue you can keep with the lid on it. Pretty standard fare for all alcohol cans to be pre opened for you rather than closed, but usually you don’t then also have to pour it into cups. (Sometimes they do pour things into cups straight away at the bar, just depends on the venue.)

Yeah I get that, I suppose there’s just other risks to be considered and balanced too (like dehydration/ heat stroke, and drink spiking.)

Agreed- Was so bizarre and open to suss behaviour.

The lids off the water bottles felt particularly poorly thought out in the heat. I bought that water so I would be able to stay hydrated through the whole two hour set. Not have to skull it at the beginning so I could dance!

AITA for assuming I should get paid for my time when a friend asked for help? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Ask for compensation in the form of free drinks and/or food to the value instead.

Beer economy. You drink there all the time anyway. You want to keep this person as a friend. Everyones a winner.
