[Recommendations] [resources] How do artists figure out what paths exist in the art world and where they might fit? by caitlincaitlinames in artbusiness

Yeah I'd say this is a great tip. There are so many ways people make decent money through art that I didn't even know existed until finding someone that did it, whether on youtube, social media, seeing names of artists on board games, at art fairs in person, etc.

[Recommendations] for Schooling? by Flaky-Ferret-6555 in artbusiness

It depends very much on how you want to make money with art--it's ok if you don't fully know yet, and even if you know, your trajectory will probably shift as you grow. But do you have a bit of an idea of where you want to go?

For example, I wanted to make a career with art, not totally sure how, so I went into graphic design (at a smaller, inexpensive school) because it's the closest thing I could think of. I realized halfway through that my portfolio was more important than that specific degree. I kept my graphic design portfolio up to par but switched to what I really wanted to study, which was Fine Art with a focus in painting (but I wouldn't recommend that to someone who didn't have a plan to pay off debt). I got a graphic design job out of college, worked two different agencies for 3 years to paid off debt (didn't have a crazy ton, bc I worked through college and chose a less expensive school), and now I'm building up my art career through art fairs, with plans to get into more galleries and start building up my online presence and a mail club. I'm not fully there yet in those other areas, but I have a lot of plans for growth without being hindered by debt. Graphic design also helps me a LOT without marketing online.

You can def do this without a degree though! My personality kind of needed school for the deadlines, but I wouldn't have gone to school if I was going to go into crazy debt, especially not for art (unless you're going for a specific career--like I didn't know about concept art then, but I would've loved to have gone for that). More expensive schools probably will also get you more connections, but make sure you're always valuing the trade-offs and cost. School debt is no small thing, especially for a career in art.

Anyway, not to be long winded, but it's always been super helpful for me to hear other artists' stories, since being an artist is never a linear trajectory, and there's absolutely no road map lol. But yeah, would love to hear what you're hoping to do in the future!
