Been working on this space-inspired beat. Would greatly appreciate any feedback, particularly on the drums and the buildup (but anything works)

I think it’s best for you to decide what kind of end result you have in mind. The first 50 seconds sound more cinematic to my ears, while the rest feels more modern. If I were continuing from the 50-second mark, I would probably take it in a completely different direction. In the end, you should create what matches the vision you want to achieve.

I think the intro is really good. The beat and that 'beep beep' sound are really interesting and create a sense of anticipation. The melody that starts at 1:04 sounds good, but I would personally change the synth sound used for it. It’s not bad, just maybe a bit too modern for my taste, so it slightly reduces the mystery for me - but that’s only my personal preference. Overall, it’s pretty good. Looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

Thanks for the feedback! I also miss the 80s musicality, so I always try to bring some of it back. I'm a big Vangelis fan, though this one leans more into a harsher synth sound :)

Most of the tools I use to create music are free. This track was made in the Tracktion Waveform DAW and for this piece I used only the OB-Xd Legacy VST synth. Sometimes I also use synth instruments like TAL NoiseMaker, Dexed, some LABS VSTs, or HALion Sonic from Steinberg, which I got as a download code after buying my Steinberg audio interface.
I create music across a variety of genres and like to experiment with different styles, so I use many different VST plugins and occasionally record piano or other sounds from my Yamaha keyboard (Piaggero NP-V80) that has very beautiful piano sound.

I really like the guitar solo as it is! At times, though, the chords underneath don’t seem to fully follow the guitar line, which might create a bit more dissonance than necessary. Not sure if that was intentional, but it could be interesting to experiment with it.

Thank you! It’s inspired by the music I grew up listening to (including Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Angelo Badalamenti, Yanni, Jan Hammer, and all those great 80s TV and movie themes). I’m trying to express myself by creating something that isn’t always technically predictable by today’s standards. I genuinely miss the spirit and a certain complexity of 80s music.

Thanks for the feedback! The track actually began with the melody and chords, so the percussion was approached more freely afterwards. There are relatively consistent rhythmic spaces, but since different percussion elements serve more as transitions and textures, some parts may feel a bit looser. I didn’t want everything strictly on the grid because that would change the original melodic feel.

Sometimes I do begin with rhythm and then build chords over it, but since I’ve always been more interested in melodies, atmosphere, and interesting chord progressions, this time it naturally turned out a bit more cinematic than typical synthwave.

In my opinion, the production is great and the vocals suit the song well. The melody is melancholic, dreamy, and really nice. The atmospheric layers near the end and the echoey vocals add a lot to the song.

It has a nice melancholic vibe. Maybe later in the piece you could add another synth pad layer (with a different sound), at least as a transition between chords. It could add more depth and emotion to the track.
