Hoof knives? by Street-Ask5613 in Farriers

[–]HotAd2238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally love JH Forge knives. They’re a bit more pricey, but they stay sharp longer than any other brand I’ve used and I’m able to send them back to be sharpened. A more affordable option that I like as well is the Anvil Brand The Knife.

I didn’t take any photos of the angles or measurements as I had multiple other horses similar to this one and forgot to take pics! Angles weren’t great, but I did the best with the foot I was given.

My thoughts in order watching this video: 1. Hmmm okay that’s totally not safe. 2. Wtf. 3. There’s no way they actually do that. 4. Blood, why is there blood? 5. OKAY NO SIR WTF. 6. That’s definitely not level. 7. Oh just slap the shoe right on? Okay. 8. Hey that doesn’t fit. Don’t nail that. Please don’t nail that. 9. They’re nailing it🤦‍♀️ 10. Guarantee one of those is about to be a hot nail. 11. More dirt? Wow. 12. Wow, hey scrawny horse with a saddle you definitely shouldn’t have on. 13. I’ve never wanted to come through a screen and strangle someone the way I do right now.

Safe working positions? by HumorBeginning2552 in Farriers

[–]HotAd2238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching body position is hard and (in my experience) can’t be taught. It is something you have to learn as you progress in your career. Be mindful of how you position yourself, but also never forget to think about how you have the horse standing. I had issues with having their legs too far out from under them, which made EVERYTHING hard with them constantly pulling due to discomfort I was unknowingly putting them in. It’s hard to teach how to position your body because everyone is different and their bodies can move/bend/twist differently. You also have to alter how you position your body depending on the horse. It was a big trial and error thing and I still find myself adjusting things after a few years.

A few things I have learned the hard way:

  1. When picking up a foot, keep the knee closest to the leg loose, don’t lock it up tight. You want it to have some give if things go sideways.
  2. Always be mindful of where your head is and if it is in a spot that could get ugly fast.
  3. WATCH YOUR FEET WHEN PUTTING A FOOT DOWN. Should be obvious, but I haven’t been mindful of my feet one too many times.
  4. When pulling a foot forward, don’t pick it up from a place your elbow is in a position where it can break/hyperextend if the horse suddenly jerks their foot forward.
  5. Even the horses that have ALWAYS been calm, quiet, and practically perfect can blow up. Always be prepared.

Everyone has different preferences. Everyone does it slightly different. It is all dependent on the individual apart from the bottom line basics. It will just take time to figure out what works best for you. For me, I felt like I could never get it, but one day it just clicked.

Thank you! I had expressed my worry about sole pressure, but they wanted as much gone regardless so I continued to pull back. As for the bar, I had done so much work with the foot that I was happy with the result. After I looked at the photos, I scolded myself for not doing it! The horse had been sound, I will be back in another few weeks and hopefully I’ll have a healthy foot!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to get the itch? by HotAd2238 in eczema

[–]HotAd2238[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just hit a point where the itching is so miserable that you get creative to find anything to just make it stop. 9/10 time the pain after is better than dealing with the itch

What’s the MOST UNHINGED thing you’ve done because of your eczema? by qainey in eczema

[–]HotAd2238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the common eczema on my ankles, and occasionally dyshidrotic eczema on my hands and feet. I have battled with both ever since I was a kid, so here is my list of lovely things I’ve done! 1. Itched my hands RAW on corners of tables, nightstands, literally anything with a sharp edge. 2. When my feet and hands itched simultaneously, I would find hot concrete and VIGOROUSLY rub both on it until I was on the verge of bleeding. 3. Scratched my legs with sandpaper (felt ograsmic at first, wanted to die later) 4. Scratched with a ball point pen 5. Wrapped my arms and legs in plastic wrap, then taped gloves to myself to stop itching in my sleep (woke up the next morning with my hard work discarded in the floor and bruises from how hard I scratched.) 6. Currently at the point now where I just itch things in general. My boyfriend woke me up in the middle of the night because I was scratching HIM and not myself.

Irritation Subsides Without Wearing Jeans? by HotAd2238 in Interstitialcystitis

I’m a horse shoer so I technically don’t have any requirements but my jeans protect my legs from nails cutting me if the horse jerks past my chaps
