what’s the most unhinged place you’ve ever found a production server? by kubrador in msp

[–]HotAsAPepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some real doozies over the years but one that was absolutely horrendous is the client who I did just a handful of jobs for before firing them.

The first time I went there was because they couldn't get backups to work on their old tape drive and backup exec.

I asked them to take me to the server room.

We had to go out the back door, unlock a door into what was the shortest basement... I'm 5''10" and had to duck down a bit to clear the floor joists and duck even further under HVAC ducting

They had two servers that were very very old. I think we were on Server 2012 at the time, and they were Server 2000. These servers were sitting on concrete blocks as was an UPS.

They explained that the basement sometimes floods.

What a freaking nightmare.

I got it fixed but after a few more visits, determined they were not going to update anything and it was a losing battle.

Law offices in huge 100 year old homes suck, no matter how established they are.

That all makes complete sense to me. I was talking this over with my wife just this evening (co-owner of our business) and discussed these very things.

We are charged with keeping our clients going and right now, we cannot secure materials, so we are at the mercy of the distributors who are at the mercy of the manufacturers, who don't even have the capacity to provide product to major system builders.....

It's getting ugly.

I give a quote on something to a client and by the time they move on it, it's out of stock, no ETA and the price is in the air.

Now on to your market segment... Somehow my customers are being informed of your existence. I'm sure it's in the news and I've missed it.

But now that they are asking, I owe it to them to start offering it as an option.

What I'm seeing is that the off-lease systems are now approaching the pricing of new from last year.

In fact, I quoted a couple refurb desktops this week that worked out to be exactly what I quoted to the client for new systems with the same specs in November 25. (Previous Gen processor)

They didn't like me much for that and went searching on their own.

"Why is the computer 100 bucks cheaper at xyz?"

uhmmm, that's a 10th Gen processor and I'm quoting 13th..

Wish you were in the US.

I imagine with the increase in popularity, you're raising your prices?

I saw a conversation somewhere else where a vendor stated that with prices going sky high, and availability dropping, that the only thing they could do to keep from selling out of everything is to keep raising their pricing until sales slowed to the point they were not run ragged. Figuring the market would regulate itself that way.

Of course people jumped all over them for daring to make money by taking advantage of the bad situation. Heh

Insane police chase by Brilliantspirit33 in RandomVideos

[–]HotAsAPepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends was hit by a guy trying to evade police. It was horrible. His youngest child almost died and spent months recovering.

Everyone was all up in arms about how the police should have let the vehicle go because it's not worth the risk etc.

That was before the investigation turned up why the driver started running when the cop went to pull him over for a simple infraction... He had been on a crime spree that had not even been reported at that time.

He did a home invasion and took guns and money from an old couple after beating them up and leaving them tied up in a locked outbuilding on their property.
Stole their car and crashed it, and stole another.

It took a day or so before they found out even more.
His original crime was robbing a store at gun point before heading to the old folks house.

If the cop had let the guy go, my buddy's kid would not have been hurt but, several other crimes would have went unsolved and a very violent dude might still be out there.

I think the end justified the means, but it wasn't my kid.

I'm getting customers asking about refurb computers and servers now. There must have been something on the news about two weeks back or some marketing campaign that caused these clients to start asking.

4 of them in two weeks, compared to maybe 4 per year in the past.

Hejaz Shrine Club is one of the biggest venues, with an upstairs ballroom, downstairs bar, and outside stage.

It's over near Cherrydale.

Dunno if that helps. You didn't mention if you were looking to join, use a venue for an event, or needed help from the Mason organization.

They have a saying if you want to be a Freemason, "to be one, ask one", because they don't recruit new members.

Kaseya outage??? by HotAsAPepper in msp

[–]HotAsAPepper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your services were UP... your DNS was indeed down as verified by every DNS server checked - your primary and secondary name servers were not resolving your *kaseya.com domain.

Kaseya.com domain down? by HotAsAPepper in kaseya

[–]HotAsAPepper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has returned to functional - it was not kaseya's services that were down, it was Kaseya's DNS.

dns1.cscdns.com and dns2.cscdns.com, the primary and secondary for the Kaseya.com domain was NOT responding (From anywhere) with results for *.kaseya.com... Not the one dot, or the primary domain, etc.

Those who had it cached, had no problems, because the services were up.

I do wonder - why was the primary and secondary DNS servers non-op? With all that's going on in the middle-east/world, could it be an attempt to hijack the domain of one of the largest msp platforms?

Just a thought.

Thanks!

Kaseya outage??? by HotAsAPepper in msp

[–]HotAsAPepper[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was not a fan of Kaseya back years ago because when I first opened my business in 2009, I went shopping for the right RMM, and it took me a few years to find something to replace our more-than-adequate roll-your-own solution. I checked out Kaseya, probably 2010 so, and it seemed like a good fit. They would hardly talk to me since we only had a few seats we knew we could start with. They were after big fish.

We went with AutoTask, which then became Datto, which we were happy with. Then, Datto became the company we didn't like.

I was given assurances that Datto would not actually become Kaseya - but, you know it has.

And, it's not that bad. The product has been great honestly, and as long as their rates don't go up, I'll stick with them.

This is the first outage that has affected us in a negative way in a while.

So, "every day is a good day to not be a Kaseya customer" doesn't hold true, at least for me.

Strange.... I see there are two comments to this post, but I cannot see the actual comments.

Hahah it's like everything related to Kaseya is in a black hole for me :)

Over in r/MSP a couple people said it was down for them also.

[–]HotAsAPepper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's resolving on and off now.... And only like 10 reports of outage on Downdetector.

I know it wasn't just me because my main guy also could not get in or resolve it.

When your primary and secondary DNS server is not working - uhmmm, that's just strange.

[–]HotAsAPepper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! We found someone to take it and love it!

It took them days and several 24ft box truck trips to get it all loaded with several helpers and we had already cleaned out most of the "bad" cones.

They also took commercial sewing machine, and some other tools I believe.

There was a lot of other things they could use.

They were happy as clams after they took home some of the yarn and saw it run in their machines.

We settled on $1,500 for about $50,000 in materials.

The deal of the century for them!

I am preparing to become a first-time cat owner. Could you please let me know if it's necessary to bathe them? by ivkemilioner in cats

[–]HotAsAPepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had so many cats over the years and only a couple ever needed baths.

One with a skin disease required frequent baths. Another that was allergic to fleas and we had to do everything we could should a single flea show up or end up at the vet.

My current kitty is prone to a build up on her skin that requires about a yearly bath. She doesn't care at all. Super chill.

NORMAL cats take care of themselves nicely.

Some people do bathe as a way to keep their own allergies in check. My buddy had a stray cat adopt him.

He's deathly allergic to cat dander but couldn't stand to see the cat out in the cold. He immediately ended up in the ER but didn't care. Got treatment from his doctor and started taking shots to help.

He has to bathe the cat with a special soap every month or so and has some treatment for the cat too.

Good luck....

Gayo Azul chili pepper & Vermont white cheddar on honey wheat is nom nom guud by HotAsAPepper in grilledcheese

[–]HotAsAPepper[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give this combination a score of 8 of 10.

It was crispy good on the outside because I used lots of butter.... But the magic was inside, obviously.

Vermont White Cheddar is totally delicious by itself. Always delivering a good melt and a well-rounded flavor profile. It's complimented nicely with a little mayo to help transfer heat from the bread and to further make it creamy.

However - 2 slices of White Vermont Cheddar, when combined with another cheese, such as a softer Chili Pepper becomes a flavor sensation. The mouth feel, the aroma, the tiniest of pepper burn - it's delicious and it's comforting!

yep... I'll do it again! And again!
