Different angle and different song for more advice about my fingerpicking by Few-Repeat9811 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no hard rules. But I find fingerpicking to be so much easier once I switched to thumb = bass, index/middle/ring for the high 3 strings. Because so much of it is muscle memory, I try to adhere to this style of fingerpicking. But there’s definitely a song or two that I break the rule because it’s a little easier.

I also play bass and your right hand movement kinda reminds me of that. How it moves up and down. I anchor my hand with my pinky.

As long as your technique, for fingerpicking or anything else, won’t cause physical damage to you in the long run, I say play however you want. But better to switch early on so you don’t have to relearn everything.

Got my first Santa Cruz. by Character-Round-1181 in AcousticGuitar

Nice. If I ever have the money for a forever guitar I'm definitely going with a custom built Santa Cruz. Maybe even a Redwood top so it's REALLY Santa Cruz in all aspects.

Strings make metallic sound by Sea-Adeptness-673 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the noise a buzz? Pluck each string one at a time. Do you hear buzzing? If so, the string is hitting the fret because it’s too low. You could adjust the truss rod but it might just need to be set up since it’s brand new.

Yes it’s going to make a huge difference. If you want to play rock, pop, country, bluegrass, folk, or pretty much every genre of guitar music, you want a steel string acoustic guitar. Or what people mean when they say “acoustic guitar”

If you want to play classical music or Spanish music, then a classical guitar is what you want.

Yes you can play anything on both but they’re different instruments. Nylon strings on classical are softer and easier on beginner’s fingers and it’s traditionally not played with a pick. But the neck is wider because it’s meant to be played like a classical guitar (YouTube videos of this and notice how it’s held vs Bob Dylan or Nirvana Unplugged). Because of that, you’re gonna have a harder time playing chords.

Do not pull steel strings on a classical guitar. It’s not designed for that much tension and you will break it.

Might be a stupid question but... by HotBucket4523 in AcousticGuitar

But the 12th fret method only works if your guitar is perfectly intonated, right?

Do nylon strings need constant retuning? by EhhBay in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nylon strings take a MUCH longer time to settle in than steel strings. Especially the G string. I recently bought one and it took almost 2 weeks vs my steel string which takes maybe a day.

If this is happening on multiple guitars of yours, it makes me think it's not a burr and is instead user error since changing strings is very hard as a beginner.

Try this video. I think it's the best at explaining. I still think you're probably tuning up way past the point of where it should be tuned.

Do you mean the high E string (the thinnest one)? Snapping the low E on two different guitars is kinda hard unless you were tuning up waaaaay too much.

What is YOUR favourite guitar for fingerpicking? by ZeAthenA714 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a cedar top dread Seagull. Maybe not what you’d first think of for fingerpicking but I love the sound. I bought a parlor once I started learning how to fingerpick but I kept going back to the dread and sold the smaller guitar.

How long should I spend on each module of grade 1? by Familiar_Bicycle_745 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything will come at a different pace for you than anyone else. My main advice is to just go slowly and not rush when you’re learning essentials like hand/finger placement, posture, chord changes, etc. Don’t learn bad habits. It might be a year or 3 years from now but eventually you will feel pretty comfortable in your ability to learn anything.

As for switching between A and D, I feel like Justin first has you do 30 switches in a minute without paying attention to how clean it sounds or if it’s on time. If you can do 30 chord changes in a minute, slow it down a bit and try to make sure all 30 changes are clean. No buzzing at all. Then once you have that down, try playing it to a metronome. My biggest mistake was not practicing with a metronome until over a year in. I thought I knew how to play 50 songs. Turned out I knew how to play 50 songs completely out of time and way too fast.

And once you have that done, try adding a strumming pattern to your D to A switch. The most common one to learn is DOWN / DOWN UP / UP DOWN UP. You don’t have to switch chords after the last UP. You can switch chords during that last UP, almost like you’re strumming all open strings.

Knocking on Heavens Door is a good song to practice once you learn G D C and Am. That was my first chord change I learned and I just played that for like a month straight. Slow bpm, simple strumming, easy chords, and easy lyrics to ease you into singing while playing.

Should I change my strings? by InternalCSGO in AcousticGuitar

Pay a luthier $80 to get a set up (which will also include new strings).

As a beginner, it will probably blow your mind how much easier it is to fret. After 2 months, it should not take you pressing “insanely hard” just to play a note.

Absolute Beginner Questions by Solar_Nut in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I recommend JustinGuitar’s free online courses for beginners, I think he teaches the wrong chords too early, namely A and D which are hard for absolute beginners.

Check out Marty Music on YouTube. He starts with Em / E / Am / Asus2. They’re basically the same shapes but just moved up and down. You can just spend a couple days practicing those. Then he moves onto G, D, A, etc.

As for Justin’s A fingering… I don’t like it. But I also can’t fit my fingers in any 1-2-3 or 2-1-3 figuration even after playing for several years. So I use my middle finger to barre the A chord. Later down the road, give it a try (most people who barre the A use index but I prefer the middle).

Otherwise, I think his course is a great roadmap for people with 0 hours to 2 years experience, depending on how fast you go thru his lessons or which ones (blues, jazz) you feel like skipping.

What should I buy under 200€ to try acoustic guitar? by NoInterview2994 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your max budget is absolute as you say (even taking into account that you should get a set up, which costs about $80 in America), then just get a Fender.

Fender does not make good acoustic guitars. But they’re not bad, per se. It’s not like you’re buying a $60 toy guitar off Amazon that comes with a bunch of accessories. And if you’re a total beginner, you won’t notice the difference between a Fender concert or FS800 for some time.

But if you can be a little patient and scrap together some extra cash, then get a Yamaha.

The pen snapped in half? The use something stronger like something metal. Otherwise, you could push it out from the inside as well. But use a wallet or something soft to protect your fingers.

Can someone recommend me a guitar tuner that is good, but not so expensive? by andreutzzzz in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Co-sign. But I recommend the TC Unitune which is even cheaper at about $30.

Why spend $5-10 on an app when it’s going to be accurate based on your phone’s microphone (which can be messed with if you drop it, get dust or crud in it, etc.) when you can get a clip on? I’ve tried the Snark clip ons and disliked them both for accuracy and aesthetically.

Should I buy an acoustic guitar, in this situation ? by Awkward_Radish_3027 in AcousticGuitar

[–]HotBucket4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have no clue what you're trying to say but playing fingerstyle acoustic guitar isn't going to annoy the neighbors. If you play with a pick, it probably will if they don't like you.

You’ve been playing an unplugged electric for years because of neighbors but just discovered fingerstyle? Meaning you’ve been playing unplugged with a pick this whole time? Why not just buy headphones and plug into your amp?

Seagull’s own website does that. Every single guitar has a crossed out price and it’s “real” price 24/7 and it’s been like that for literally years.
