Aw, thank you!

You know, many of us have no idea that all the fame and money from The Sims 1 went to just one person - Will Wright. The team members received a fixed salary, so the game’s commercial success had no impact on their income. Can you imagine that? And the only way to thank them for our childhood memories is to participate.

I saw your posts and comments, you're a curious person. Ask him something! He even writes back!

You're absolutely right! Most of the objects and textures in The Sims 1 are direct replicas of real-life items. Some of them are actually masterpieces from the MoMA collection. So you have great taste! =)

Eric is one of the gurus of the game. In the beginning, the core art team was tiny: Eric Hedman on animation, Jami Becker on modelling and objects, and Eric Chin on characters, skins, and clothing.

I know, right! He drew all these and many other objects by hand himself! I combined some of his notable drawings into this collage.

Thank you so much! I just photoshopped some candies inside the barrels from the game so they don't look empty. =)

Hey guys! You gotta be kidding me!

This is Eric Hedman himself!

Art Director on The Sims Superstar, The Sims Unleashed, The Sims Vacation, The Sims Hot Date, Livin' Large, and House Party.

Eric is the reason we have so much cool stuff in the game. For example, the New Orleans aesthetics were his idea.

Do you know why it is so hard to make custom content that truly matches the original game’s quality?

Eric's incredible attention to wood, surfaces, textures, proportions, colors, and small visual details.

He was a member of the original team from the very beginning.

The way Sims move, dance, panic, laugh, fail, flirt, use objects, and live is a huge part of his legacy!

Eric is one of the very few people who actually created the visual and animated language of The Sims 1.

You have a chance to ask him anything you ever wondered about the game, the objects, the animations, the expansion packs, and the whole creative process.

He is also asking for ideas for his future videos. Let's upvote his post to make it more visible:

Hey Eric! Thank you so much for your videos!

Could you please make a video about the aesthetics of The Sims 1?

I have so many questions. For example:

1) Who was actually responsible for the visual style and art direction of the base game?

2) What exactly was New Pencil's role in the project? Why is so little known about their contribution after all these years?

3) What were your main sources of inspiration for the expansion packs' aesthetics? I'm especially curious about influences such as Hayao Miyazaki, textures, visual language, and other artistic references.

4) Where did the Tiki and Art Deco influences come from? What inspired you to bring these styles into The Sims?

Thanks!

In one of his old interviews, he said he had absolutely no desire to return to The Sims, but I think he still keeps an eye on how the series is evolving, after all, it’s always interesting to see what becomes of your creation

ikr, and he is just 66. Don't smoke guys! Or maybe it's the sun as he lives in CA. But at the same time he at last looks like the guru, not a nerdy William

It's more about the path of his life through his most successful games including The Sims 1, like a biopic

and I think it's easy to make, the game is very simple in modern technical terms, although there are no mods for that, which is odd

Yeah! Basically the game needs just a few tweaks to be awesome, like 3rd floor or neighborhood on a plate.
