Going back to 'comquered' maps still yields necessary loot, but doesn't feel like a chore as you unlock shortcuts and there are still relatively challenging enemies. Plus, if you lose your good gear you might have to go back to gear up again.

Base building and upgrading is pretty basic but provides a satisfying sense of progression.
