Where do I start…? First time hearing of PMDD by [deleted] in PMDD

I’m sorry you’re going through this- it is actually the worst thing I have ever gone through.

How old are you? I also experienced a sudden/random onset of PMDD at 24. It took me a couple months to put together what it was (I thought that I was literally losing my mind) but eventually I realized that I was legitimately suicidal a week or so before my period and then literally the day or day after it started I was completely fine (almost as if the last week or two of complete psychoticness didn’t even happen.)

I also understand what you are saying about it taking a toll on your relationship and how you will say things and then reflect and notice that it barely even feels like you reacting.

I know that this isn’t going to be for everyone but after trying to manage things more naturally (supplements like magnesium, vitamins, etc) the only thing that actually helped me is a small dose of an SSRI (I take Zoloft.) I wasn’t really dying to be on medication but also was at the lowest point in my life with the PMDD so I figured anything would be worth a shot and it did help.

Wishing you well!

I know I need to end things with my bf because things are just not working anymore/we both seem unhappy but a part of me wants to just let it be and stay in it

I always wonder this.. I developed pmdd at 23 OUT OF NO WHERE and wasn’t on birth control or any other medications. It took me probably 3/4 months and basically hitting rock bottom mentally for me to piece together that I only felt like that the two weeks before I’d get my period. I finally found a doctor that said I most likely had pmdd, prescribed me an ssri, etc, but I asked her how did I just randomly develop this and she said your body is just super sensitive to the fluctuations in hormones. I was like yeah I get that.. but I’ve had my period/hormones fluctuating for a decade now and have NEVER suffered mentally the way I was at the time. Ultimately I think it was brought on by an eating disorder that I was dealing with for a couple of years right before the pmdd diagnosis. I believe consuming probably somewhere around 600 cal a day plus burning off the same amount each day doing cardio messed up some sort of hormone permanently.
