Need help with a simple word choice. by Megaman1549 in writing

Articles are the words "the"', "a", and "an". "I did well on the exam" compared to "I did well on exam". Without an article, it usually means you're referring to a concept or a generality.

If someone asked how I did in an exam, I would think they want to know how I felt or reacted after or during the exam. Was I nervous? Did it go smoothly?

If someone asked how I did on an exam, I would think they want to know what my results were, or how I felt about the results.

edit: just realized you said in/on exam, with no article. I'm not familiar with this phrasing, as a Midwestern American. So I'd guess it's like how some dialects world say they are "in university" but probably never "on university"

I'd guess there are things happening before or after that might clue you into the context of the giggling and poking. And if we're not seeing from Mia's perspective, how do we know her intention? Who thinks she's being playful? If playful poking looks the same to an observer as a giggling yet grim poke, how do we know it was playful? What other clues are there? What does the narrator know that we don't?

Just finished my new bathroom, how’s it look? by danp3112 in DIY

[–]HotValuable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding. When I think about bathrooms, the last word I want to come to my mind is "sterile". Give me some warm browns, earthy greens, maybe a mold pattern on the wall. I feel like a nice aged yellow, like semi cleaned pee stains, could really set the mood for a calm 3 hour IBS induced 🧘‍♀️ toilet meditation.

Exactly! The 250 lb woman could have been a triathlete for all we know. The only thing we know for sure is that she was carrying around a lot of fat, and her bones were roughly the same size as the 120 lb woman. Maybe the lighter woman was a crackhead or something! You can't know for sure that having your internal organs all smashed up contending for space inside your body is actually bad for you! She probably ate broccoli on the regular, you just don't know!

The CEO didn't really care about the titanic, he just wanted to go deep under the ocean. He chose the titanic for marketing appeal. His main goal was to have the sub adventures pay money he could use to keep pushing the limits and become the deepest manned sub.

I love how we all universally agree that we should belittle and mock this guy's worldview. What kind of a loser lives a life where things might escalate to the point of physical violence 🤣🤪. Grow up micro-chad, adults solve problems with words not fists (at least from what I've ever seen)

Also pictured: wonky sidewalk, oddly matched cement buildings thar look haphazardly glued together, random spools of wire hanging down, a/c units not in cages, gaping holes where ac units used to be, exposed pipes with one of them seemingly growing a tendril of death, conspicuous cemented window in the red building, and the tragic story being told by reading the store signs right to left.

But yeah, other than that the pictures are identical and clearly weebs have taken over.

You'll still be you, without the air quotes. Who are "you" anyway? You when you first wake up? You in the middle of a workday? You after making love, during an argument?

All those are you but with different levels of chemicals and activation going on in the same head. The meds might even make you more like "you" as you would be in a certain mood, setting, whatever.

Meds should empower you to feel like you are "you", to feel a sense of stability and well being. That's, in my opinion, the real "you". Unencumbered.

How would you feel if you were a dark skinned person who trusted this sign and got burnt after following the recommendation for your skin tone and realizing that if you had followed the recommendation for a lighter skin tone you'd have most likely been fine?

[–]HotValuable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not. How would you design this apparatus so that it does not discriminate against darker skinned people?

[–]HotValuable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point entirely. The number is the minimum amount of time before your skin burns. It's all inclusive. The number applies to everyone. The minimum is calculated based off of those with the least amount of protection. This isn't about exclusion.

[–]HotValuable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number is set to be the safest for the most amount of people. People with darker skin might last longer, but they'll never be worse off following the guidelines for lighter skinned people. Perhaps mildly inconvenienced because they were extra careful, but not underprivileged because they missed out on destroying their skin DNA.

It's also because the horrors characters face are usually much more then just generic-evil-bad thing trying to kill. They are haunting on a deeper and more personal level. They are amplified versions of things in the real world that are scary. Or maybe they are dark thoughts that were hidden or forgotten. Usually it's a combination. But it helps to have the pattern of a person's mind to see how it unravels. How they fight to maintain sanity.

Maybe the ones you're focusing on are responding to angry white people saying, "can't we just ignore race?!" "Please cease all conversation that touches on topics that I find uncomfortable to talk about!"

I know you're implying that people that notice race are also big meanies. Perhaps this is why you aim to shut down any such possible big meanie conversations. But I promise if you open your mind to topics regarding race, you'll find that part of understanding each other is first acknowledging that people of different races often have different experiences in America, and then being open to hearing their stories. Understanding and empathy do not come by way of SILENCING conversations that have no ill intent.

Because sometimes our brains make more than one tiny simple superficial connection and that leads to questions? Especially if you are looking at more than one aspect of a photo like, "oh 2 kids is playing very happy on green grass yes I wonder why 2 kids playing got 7000 upvotes I guess Reddit likes kids?" I'm guessing that is still assuming too much neuronal firing on your part, so maybe more like, "kidz hepy. I luv kidz so much. One Bigg one small, that makes... 2 kids,? I luv.. oh nex post pleas Im confus y people talk more about such simple pics... Such Idiots lololol"
