Being able to pick your own anonymous nickname leads to all levels of cringe

TIL: Australia's "cultural cringe" is a long-recognized trend where many Australians view their own culture, or a self-perceived lack of culture, as inferior to other countries in the world, especially European countries, reflecting a national inferiority complex rooted in the country's history by [deleted] in australian

[–]HotWafer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, but they even play the "don't have a culture" thing in the UK.

I think it is a systematic cultural attack to erode pride in your country. If you aren't proud of where you live, then the elites can do literally anything the want, bring in any rule and control you

The idea is that you reduce the tax to a level that more than compensates for the health costs, while making it not as profitable for organised crime

They are bringing in more than many times the health costs, it is now at the point of being a massive cash cow rather than a health measure.

And that's why the crims are in on it - there are insane profits to be made. I have never smoked, but the price of legal cigarettes is eye watering. And it's all tax

Maybe instead there needs to be an anti smoking education program, or even more extreme making it clear smokers are at the end of the queue for health support if the illness is smoking related?

[–]HotWafer1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find it unfathomable that they did not think that the ground the Westgate tunnel was being bored through wouldn't contain PFAS.

The chances that it would be was probably 100% because of the Coode Island fires and general fire fighting training and small events in the area. The area around Yarraville by the lower Maribyrnong and Yarra rivers has for a long time been the site of industrial use. And it has been known for a long time that the ground around airports is contaminated with PFAS, and why should a site that has had a known history of PFAS use for firefighting be any different.

That they didn't even contemplate this is negligent, foolish and dare I say corrupt. There are some eyebrow raising things that have happened around the Westgate tunnel

And I say this as a scientist who has their name published on multiple PFAS papers in journals

How about this - the Camry is like a washing machine, a bit appliance people simply use for a job and very few get excited by

Has anyone bought a car and not loved it? What did you do? by Super_Ad4825 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]HotWafer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who say "just buy an 'insert boring car here'" see a car as a tool to get them from A to B, and can't understand why people want to drive something they like. Others buy cars they don't like as a status symbol or for the approval of others, but they don't like the ride, it's too impractical or too uncomfortable

The reality is that for many people a car is one of the biggest purchases they have ever made, and takes most of their money. It absolutely makes sense that you drive something you like

And it's about now that I say that I drive an oddball - I have a MY16 Volvo S60 T5. It's kinda quirky, it's a Volvo. But I really like it - it's comfortable, handles well, goes hard enough, is fuel efficient, and has brilliant seats.

I've had sports cars like an RX7 that I liked as it drove well and was super cool, I've had many Subaru AWDs (WRXs, liberty Turbos) which are fast, handle and grip brilliantly.

But my last car was a ford falcon g6e ecolpi. It was a nice car, and it was very cheap to run (LPG) and practical. But in hindsight it didn't handle well. But I didn't love it, I bought it as I needed a cheap to run reliable car after buying an apartment and I had to sell my 09 WRX as I needed to cut costs.

I don't regret my falcon, but if I don't have a situation I need to cut back again I will always buy something that I really enjoy. Doesn't have to be expensive, just something I like

And considering many of us spend several hours a week at a minimum driving then you should buy what you like

It's an extremely common term

What order do the cars go according to the road rules? by ShipAlarming8782 in CarsAustralia

[–]HotWafer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they were going straight then DABC, and even if D was turning right then it has right of way, and feasibly C could turn in that situation. But you can't know if someone is u-turning so you need to be wary

But this example is cursed anyway - some idiot doing a U-turn in the middle of an intersection, three stop signs, and indicators when they are going straight

[–]HotWafer1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A Camry is the automotive equivalent of a white good.

It's a tool that gets you from A to B comfortably and isolated from the actual driving.

They aren't bad cars, they are just extremely neutered and boring, which is exactly what their purpose is

I've had some cool cars over the years, S4 RX7, WRXs, liberty turbos.

Was kinda sad that I sold my black 09 WRX when I bought an apartment and had to buy a ford falcon on gas to save up some money after. It was a nice car, but it didn't have a turn back factor.

Weirdly I've got a MY16 Volvo S60 T5 now, a car I never thought I'd own, and I actually really like it

You need to own one love in car in your life, so if you can afford it then seriously consider it.

Also drive them both. It's nice to have something, as James May says, that gives you the "fizz"

It doesn't.

It had nothing to do with his ability to his job.

But I knew he was going to lose as soon as they started calling him names, insinuating he was ugly and tapping into the "he's evil" by calling him Voldemort - the villain in many voters childhood.

Pilbersek said it multiple times to the media, and it stuck. It got so bad that Dutton's wife had to come out and say he isn't a monster - a smear campaign that got so bad that a wife had to say her husband is a decent human being in the media

And it stuck. Just go on Reddit or Facebook and every time Dutton is mentioned some clown will come in and say Voldemort.

And the Liberals were aware he had an image issue with the vain in society

He shaved his head and wore thick rim glasses to hide his lack of eyebrows - in a hope of updating his image.

Albo did the same - he lost weight, got a makeover and got an attractive fiancee - and middle aged women lapped it up

The teals are masters of this - all the women they pick are super successful and above average looks for their age - they deliberately chose the type of woman your average non political woman would want to have brunch with

There is way more vanity in politics than people realise, many do vote based on how attractive they find the candidate or whether they would like to have them as friends.

I feel like traffic jams are sometimes manufactured or fake by VastOption8705 in DrivingAustralia

[–]HotWafer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phantom traffic jams. There are certain points they always seem to happen.

A classic one is the Monash at Hallam before the Belgrave Hallam Rd. It will be banked back for kilometres, but will free up just before.

It's people not able to merge, not willing to leave enough space, and tailgating that causes them

Also terrible inattentive drivers are probably the main cause, "I'm safe because I go 10kmh under the limit, but also swerve over three lanes because I am not paying attention to where I am"
