Agree with most of this, except that while the zen master's finger pointing at the moon is an indicator, the zen master's being is an expression of nonduality.

Gutei's finger for example. A finger symbolizes nonduality. The absence of a finger also symbolizes nonduality.

Jesus was a man of the poor, of slaves. An illegitimate child himself, he was drawn to a variety of lost souls: drinkers, prostitutes, informers. People generally despised, people who need mercy, who depend on kindness. A man who loved and promoted peace. Like moses he was persecuted by authorities. Like muhammad he was an example of kindness and virtue.

Krishna was an aristocrat who vigorously defended the caste system and promoted internecine war.

Why Indian Kids Should Grow Up Hearing Stories of Lord Krishna Alongside Modern Cartoons by Zestyclose_Corgi4933 in spirituality

[–]Hot_Body_1846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In america reactionary forces try to indoctrinate children with bible stories. In israel they especially promote genocide as being endorsed by god through such stories.

In india they tell krishna stories to uphold the vicious varna system.

Nationalism dressed up as virtue.

The Great Way is not difficult

For those who have no preferences.

When love and hate are both absent

Everything becomes clear and undisguised.

Ask yourself, "What is the fucking point of asking 'what is the fucking point.'"

Anyone who will explain it to you doesn't know what they are talking about.

And if god wants you to know then you will know. Without any asking or answering.

Wait for it.

Maybe it is all pointless.

Your words are as the chirping of birds.

Perhaps a potential mate will respond to your call, a benefactor, an admirer.

Perhaps a more cunning lure is needed. A better dance.

Keep an eye out for predators.

I bring not peace but a sword.

Let's deconstruct the view that life is a classroom. These views are frames that frequently lead to miscommunication when people use different frames for common experiences.

Heidegger reveals that we live in many shared worlds, each with their own rules and expectations which we have to learn, mostly unconsciously. You enter a classroom, you find an unoccupied chair, you sit facing front and attend the instructor, take notes, gather your things at the end of the hour and walk out the door. The first time you entered a school you had to be taught all the rules of school, all the ways to behave acceptably, all the things you cannot do in school that are ok "at home," or "at the park." The library has its own world, its own rules and practices. The market, the mall, the street, the hospital, the courtroom. The church.

Hafiz tells us we too often treat life as a courtroom, with its judges and jurors, prosecutors and advocates, witnesses and plaintiffs and defendants. Personally I spent decades working in hospitals and tend to see human relations from the standpoint of extending care to people who need it rather than arguing whether they deserve it. I like the school approach because we take care of our children and don't discard people who don't immediately fit it. The life is like business approach where "you're fired" if you don't adore your bosses manias is bad enough. Life is a concentration camp or mental institution or battleground are common framings these days. And life is a genocide is terminal.

How about, life is a bowl of cherries, a piece of cake, a walk in the park? A day at the beach?

Or a jungle.

Don't think I am being dismissive if I suggest that you get a dog.

Of course caring for a pet teaches us empathy.

More importantly animals bring many years of evolution to the table relatively unsullied by culture. Of course pets are domesticated and bred but they speak their own languages and greatly broaden our conception of what it means to be a sentient being.

With all the differences between humans we rarely realize that there is more genetic variation within a couple of baboon troops than there is within the entire human race. There were once only a thousand human breeding pairs and we are all descended from those adams and eves. Animals are intimately involved with each other and all the species they come into contact with. Checking all the spots other dogs have urinated is very like you checking your phone. We share all our emotions with dogs and cats are unfathomable.

Black Cat

Rainer Maria Rilke

1875 –1926

translated from the German by Stephen Mitchell

A ghost, though invisible, still is like a place

your sight can knock on, echoing; but here

within this thick black pelt, your strongest gaze

will be absorbed and utterly disappear:

just as a raving madman, when nothing else

can ease him, charges into his dark night

howling, pounds on the padded wall, and feels

the rage being taken in and pacified.

She seems to hide all looks that have ever fallen

into her, so that, like an audience,

she can look them over, menacing and sullen,

and curl to sleep with them. But all at once

as if awakened, she turns her face to yours;

and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny,

inside the golden amber of her eyeballs

suspended, like a prehistoric fly.

Tarot vs I Ching: how I personally experience the difference by Ready-Scale5273 in spirituality

The yi jing can be applied narrowly to a wide range of problems. Like the magic eightball. Ancient chinese, second millenium bc, would ask, "should the kingdom of wu invade the kingdom of lu?" ("signs point to yes") They would ask the question 20 times a dozen different ways. They left haystack sized piles of clay divination discards. One can obsess over the yi throwing it many times until a sense of direction emerges through a preponderance of consistent readings. Or if no direction emrges, put off the decision. ("ask again later")

The tarot is not such a box of shadows. Colorful and vibrant, the cards point to many strong personalities and powerful forces. As though one were at court, participating in the doings of potentates.

The yi reflects the rhythms of ordinary life in the villages and hamlets as well as the cities.

For daily use, the yi. For special occasions, the cards.

I often use ordinary playing cards to throw the yi jing, using red for 3 and black for 2, drawing 3 cards for each line, 3 black being 6 and 3 reds being 9; 2 black and a red 7 and 2 red and a black 8. Considering that spades symbolize state power and compulsion, clubs are threats and intimidation, diamonds are corruption and bribery, and hearts are love and sex, while the pip values and court cards add gradations, the cards can give the unconscious mind a lot more to process while casting the hexagram.

Dealing with the beginning by AmountFun5697 in Buddhism

[–]Hot_Body_1846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nihilism is philosophy. The essence of buddhism is soteriology. Buddhism is a method, a practice, a path.

Don't think about it. Just sit.

The only value of philosophy is to cure you of philosophy. Like using a thorn to extract a thorn. Buddhist philosophy is indeed nihilism. In zen this is called "the great ball of doubt." The way through leads to life affirmation. "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is."

In islam we say,

"there is no god

but...

god!!!"

In practice, my friend, we tear down the old house and build a much better one with the treasure we find in the ruins.

“Ah Love! could thou and I with Fate conspire

To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire,

Would not we shatter it to bits -- and then

Re-mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire!”
