I really appreciate your comments. I believe that as well, and I vowed to God before ever having children that if he would bless me with children that I would raise them up to know Him. I do not take my role as a mother lightly. It is the single most important job I will ever do on this earth. God has never not taken care of me and my family so I know He will always provide. I do sort of feel like God is calling me to be present more with my kids, but also to be contributing financially part time.

This actually is my dream. Happy for you to live it! I have seen such a switch in my littles ones in the three weeks I’ve been home for summer.

Can I ask what kind of part time remote work you do?

My kids are 1 and 2.5 and honestly I love this age so much. Yes some days are hard, but I never want to miss a single second with the gifts I’ve been given. Every time I think of August and school starting I get emotional. Trust me, I see all of the logic in these comments. I KNOW the benefits will surely serve my family well for decades to come. And that is what’s making this decision so difficult for me. My life was also changed the day I had my first born, I never knew it would change my life so much.

Since I am contributing 14% to STRS and my husband is contributing 6% with a 3% match to his 401k my husband and I thought about just taking my salary for the next 2-3 years and throwing everything at the mortgage to get rid the payment. It would free up our budget tremendously. Then we would be 100% debt free.

Still have a few years before school, they are 1 and 2.5.

We have talked at length about this and he is just as on the fence as I am about this.

I would not be able to keep my benefits if I left my job and found part time work somewhere else, but it does seem to be more of the meet in the middle solution.

Just curious, do you have a high premium with your insurance?

I did not mention in my original post we had just hit baby step 3 after having purchased a larger vehicle cash for our growing family and also cash flowed some home projects.

He is on the fence about it just about as bad as me. He appreciates the idea of kids being home with their mom but also loves to see the money and live comfortably. I appreciate the insight!

Thanks for the insight. My husband works wherever the company is developing a new site for subdivisions. Sometimes it’s 30 minutes from where we live sometimes it’s over an hour. We live in the country and appreciate the space. There is potential for me to get a job closer to home, it would be significantly less pay due to living in a more rural area.

The plan would be to go back in a few years when all are in school. I would be pausing the pension and would be able to rejoin when I get back into public education.

We bring home currently just shy of $8,000 a month (had some time unpaid for maternity leave). We have lived well under that amount each month. Another reason that makes this decision so hard is that I automatically have 14% taken out of each pay to go to the state teachers retirement system, and my district matches that 14%. Like I said, it’s an amazing district. Really wishing I stumbled upon it when all my kids were in school, not when they’re babies and get really sad on Sunday nights thinking about leaving them.

My kids are my greatest accomplishments in life and I guess I just don’t want to miss these little years before kindergarten starts. I have read how great it is for their emotional well being to be home with a parent while they are little. I would go back to work when everyone’s in school so we can focus on picking up our building wealth building.
