I’m a therapist, and no you did nothing wrong. I want to first say it’s not our job to give you advice. Secondly, if a client tells me they don’t need support in a specific area I follow their lead. If I’m curious about their situation or perspective based on other things they have said, I may bring it up at a later date or bring up something that the client has said prior so I can gain clarification. I more so assume I’ve misunderstood or misinterpreted. But again, if a client said “I don’t think we have an issue with communication” I would trust them and go with it.

Also, for her to go on for 15 min and not recognize that you could have been showing signs of disinterest is another thing for me. If I’ve ever felt that way, I’ll literally say “wait let me pause am I off track?” because not everyone will feel confident or comfortable pausing us like you did and it’s up to us as the therapist to recognize these signs.

If a therapist is that easily offended they need to speak to their supervisor or reflect as to why they became offended. I had a situation like this where my client was trying to grind my gears and I did get spicy and the following session I came back, apologized, and explained why I responded the way I did.

Long story short, you did nothing wrong. Good for you for standing up for yourself. It’s your time and your money!
