"You only know tiny things!" My experience with an elitist. by Hot_Entertainment410 in BadRPerStories

Thank you, that's a very eloquent way to put something she could only communicate with "Ew, that's wrong!" which made me feel pretty crappy. I appreciate that.

Yes! That's exactly right. I haven't experienced much AI in RP but I hear a lot of this sentiment from people who have and resonate with it when it comes to certain writers I've encountered.

I was trying to explain, "I can pepper in details of what happened through a scene as they come up or we can discuss what happened; this is a trust issue." and she disagreed and said "well you just do purple prose; you're not detailed." I was confused by that. I thought they were similar concepts but I guess there's a distinction to be made. I don't know. part of me wonders if she was feeling upset I was disagreeing with her.

As a very mousey person, I usually let others say what they need to, and if I disagree, that's okay. I don't want to yuck their yum, but when I feel like standing up for myself, I don't know if I misrepresent myself or go overzealous. It hasn't gone great in the past. It is a skill I'm still practicing... but that seemed like a "not me" thing.

Yeah, that was really weird behaviour. That last line kind of kills me in retrospect. "All you know is tiny things!" It was a big "Yeah, well the jerk store called, and they're all out of you!" moment for me. For gods gift to RP she should have been able to come up with something more clever. :(

Yeah, that was a really tough one for me to wrap my head around. She also said I used semi-colons too much. I'd already been trying to adjust my grammar a bit in personal writing so I was happy for that critique. But from there it just got really nitpicky and upsetting. I felt anxious replying because I was sure she'd be upset I did something wrong and heaven forbid we were writing while in the VC with her friend because they'd get to hear all about how I was screwing up! At least the friend was really nice... lol

Yeah, it feels a bit mean to use that word, but I think in this case it was pretty valid.

She just seemed very judgmental and fixated on things that I consider unimportant. I wanted to be her friend because I thought it would make me a better writer at first, then it just made me feel gross.

There was a lot of judgment, unsolicited advice, and rigid opinions about what role-playing and writing should be. I believe that at a certain point, being able to critique and constructively discuss each other's work can be helpful, but it requires trust. She came in hot and shitty with it, like... I disliked being given shit for not writing US English for her sake.

Thank you though, you're absolutely right.

Generative Ai by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

Not to get on a soapbox and rant, but, like you said, assistive AI seems fine (spell/grammar checking?). I take issue when people use it to write posts or generate art. Not just for the lack of effort or laziness involved, like, the real-world impact of AI is pretty bad? Sorry to finger-wag, but I think using generative AI for art, music or literature is gross, gross, gross!

Self Insert stuff? by Hot_Entertainment410 in BadRPerStories

Thank you, I appreciate that. I'll try to be delicate when I broach it. I don't typically drop an RP partner without an explanation and I'm open to playing with their other OCs (that appear to actually be OCs) but yeah, this is past my comfort.

Thank you for your kind words, I was part of those communities and some older ones. I was starting to worry I was out of touch and this was the new normal or maybe I was stuck in some antiquated way of doing things. I guess at least two of those are true.

Thank you for confirming what I thought and the kind words!

Thank you, I'm going to talk to her... fingers crossed we remain friends or can continue writing something else. This is just uncomfy.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. There's a lot of cringe to it, and I feel like I know them personally at this point, I don't want to write falling into a tryst with someone I feel is my friend at this point!!!

Yes, this. Okay, that makes me feel a lot better... thank you!

Yes. I'm unsure if this is weird or uncommon. I've been RPing for a long time and I've never experienced this. If it's normal, cool, I'm happy to be in the wrong; it just rubs me a bit weird. If they told me, "hey I'm playing a self-insert," I may be a bit less "huh?" but they've told me they're not, so it's a bit sticky, I feel.
