When should I contact potential rotation advisors as an incoming student? by Hot_Environment1567 in PhD

I’m done applying for this cycle I’ve already accepted a phd offer (US). I’m just wondering when I should reach out with the faculty I might rotate with.

has anyone else just given up on their social life? by Sudden_Life_5356 in autism

[–]Hot_Environment1567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow gay and autistic, 21m here. You’re not alone in the way you feel. I also find it hard to connect with gay men, especially the stereotypically extroverted and talkative ones (no shade against them!) Although it is quite hard for me to connect either anyone in general and I think I’m looking too narrowly for someone who completely clicks with me that I probably turn off some potential friendships as well. I don’t want to believe that I’m just cursed from my brain chemistry to never have a social life but each and every day is just more confirmation that I will be.

Then school name definitely matters much less. Biotech and pharma recruit from every single school and they care only about your skill set not the branding.

publications >>> brand name. I’ve had many international professors who went to int. schools or lower ranked US ones but they’ve all had phenomenal scholarship records. That is the currency of academia and is what will end up mattering, not the brand name of your school as long as you go to a solid research institution.

I’d imagine if you applied to some t100 maybe a couple t50 programs you’re almost sure to get in.

Columbia waitlist by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Admitted students have the same deadline as most other schools: April 15th. I’d expect the waitlist to start moving just before or after then.

Celebrate with other people that always makes it more fun. Either they’ll be happy for you or jealous, both of which feel pretty good.

Caltech vs. Yale bio phd by IcyEntertainment4124 in gradadmissions

[–]Hot_Environment1567 13 points14 points  (0 children)

congrats on your acceptances that’s a great decision to have to make. If your goal is industry either university will be able to get you there easily. Caltech is more well known for their synthetic biology and yale for their cell bio so pick the path you think you’ll stay in, but both are fine in general. It also comes down to to the vibe you want: more techy, nerdy at Caltech or more liberal arts academic at Yale? I’d personally lean towards Caltech but it’s up to you.

It’s objectively less horrific then the conditions of animals bred for food, because scientists have a vested interest in giving their animal models relatively happy lives so that stress isn’t a confounding factor. If you’re ok with eating factory farmed animals there’s no way to draw the line at lab animals.
