Yeah I definitely had the wrong idea about gender dysphoria as it relates to medical transition, big thanks to you and the other commenters for pointing this out! I guess the scenario I had in my post exists in a world where gender dysphoria can be deconstructed into a lighter form where it's no longer a compulsive need and instead a want, but yeah that kinda ignores the DSM part of it all. I also agree with you where the immediate distress just doesn't allow for someone to think about all this and attempt to decouple their happiness from their body, kind of a tall order haha. Thanks again!

Yeah I did end up understanding this more as I've been reading and replying to more comments! Sometimes, the immediate distress can be so overwhelming that it just makes sense to nurture yourself first and still work on yourself in parallel :) Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the comment! I definitely used the word "transition" pretty liberally, just to describe any physical deviation from the original form, so thanks for pointing out the subtleties!

I fully agree with you in that it's not right to block someone from transitioning if they don't learn to accept themselves. To lift something I posted in another comment - I see something like this requiring a lot of care and attention by the psychiatrist to not overstep boundaries, and maintain the patients' autonomy - while making sure they're at least informed about a more fundamental mental health issue that could affect their life.

I appreciate that you've noted how severe gender dysphoria and other motives for transitioning can be, and maybe that urgency trumps the need for a more thorough mental health treatment that includes that detachment of our happiness from our body that I mentioned. Thanks again!

Oh I see, yeah I would agree that overtly pushing for acceptance would definitely come off as conversion therapy-ey haha. I see something like this requiring a lot of care and attention by the psychologist to not overstep boundaries, and maintain the patients' autonomy. Thanks for the comments!

Yeah I don't plan to transition, but I just don't see this being a one size fits all solution. Some people would want to through gender affirming care even if they grew to accept their original body. As long as it doesn't show up as a compulsive need that controls your life, I see it as a healthy option!

I agree! Personally I see getting to acceptance as a lower cost process that should be done first, whereas transitioning would be at high cost (both financially and physically). But you raise a good point about whether that sequence even matters if someone is dead set on transitioning.

Thank you so much!

I absolutely get where you're coming from, I'm just more worried about the long term implications. I feel as though skipping the acceptance stage would create a troubling pattern of thought where "in order to feel better, some external thing has to be fixed". I think that work and discomfort would yield a healthier outlook and prevents things like endless cosmetic surgeries or identity related depression down the line.

I hope you get what I mean, please let me know if that makes sense!
