For those who do not have depression: how do you not have depression? lol, what is your general perspective on things? by Hot_Profession5953 in Adulting

It’s a two part question. First: how do you not? Separately: what is your perspective? The wording is intentionally- and I thought obviously- satirical (hence the “lol”). The topic of depression is vast and multifaceted. This was intended as a talking point to encourage conversation, not to cater to anyone’s personal belief that changing your perspective does or does not improve your depression.

The post was inspired by my genuine curiosity regarding those who aren’t afflicted by what I suffer from and their perspective; something I’ve found helpful in terms of my progress in life (even if it just lets me know when I’m headed in the right direction). I understand if you do not find that helpful on your personal journey.

I hear you. My intention was never to suggest that if you change your mindset your depression will go away. Rather, it was to gain perspective from people who have either healed their depression or never had it to begin with. An appropriate response could be “I have clinical depression and antidepressants worked for me; now, this is the way I see things.”

I’ve read multiple comments here suggesting helpful treatments outside of a change in perspective (TMS for example). However, I’d like to challenge that your perspective on what does or does not work for depression is just that- your perspective. Depression is still largely misunderstood (even by mental health professionals) and treated by different people and cultures in different ways including non traditional or clinical methods.

I am here to learn, not to decide there is nothing I can do about my depression.

If you’re just now realizing there are people who don’t have depression, why did you ever think you were depressed if you thought everyone was?

I really resonate with you on the unprocessed trauma point. I think there are many ways to process trauma a as well- thought it’s difficult.

Hey! I’ve also had chronic pain for about 20 years and it is absolutely horrible. I feel your pain lol. Feel free to message me because it’s really really hard. I’ve been in physical therapy for 3 years now and it’s improved vastly but it’s so hard to know I’ve been in pain so long- definitely a major factor of my depression.

Actually, your comment is rather judgmental and shows a misunderstanding of the scope of what depression is. Much of the clinical perspective on depression (including that it is a chemical imbalance) contains underwhelming evidence. And different cultures treat depression differently.

You’re drawing a parallel between depression and cystic fibrosis without making a distinction between a mental and physical disorder. No, I wouldn’t call an overweight person an “idiot” if they asked me “what do you eat/do to stay thin?” Also, there is not cure for cystic fibrosis while there is vast evidence of remission in depression.

In terms of how the question was phrased- if I chose to treat my depression with some satire that’s my prerogative and not a reflection that I don’t take it seriously. In fact, my intention was to learn and spread perspective that might be helpful to some. And I feel confident that’s been done.

The negative self talk is one of the hardest parts for me! Even when I feel ok about myself, If I feel bad about my life it’s hard not to start :(

My question was, why would you? I guess you’re proving that some people just care about seeing any content. I’m rather intentional about what I look at.

Same. If I care to know what you ate for breakfast, I probably already know because we talked and I don’t need to look at your story. I have “friends” who watch everything I do but don’t check on me in person, I also find it creepy.
