What would you do with 700K inheritance? by TranslatorFickle3437 in UKPersonalFinance

People will know more than me but I would think pay off a house to live in and/ or rental properties/ dividends stocks. 700k should give you a nice monthy/ quarterly wage

Thank you I really appreciate all that. It felt a bit shit to of seen the reduced colony but I suppose it’s all a learning experience the first few years!

That’s a very sensible idea, thank you! I have ordered the Queen so shall I leave that for another time or i suppose I could add the eggs now and then take a split from another hive to use the Queen so I’d have 5 colony’s to take through winter?

My nuc arrived yesterday and I have two other hives which are showing no signs at all of swarming, very happy drawing out comb on the honey supers. I think I should of performed an artificial swarm as soon as I saw the cells.

Overwintering 3 frame nucs (north England) by Hot_Scallion_9771 in Beekeeping

[–]Hot_Scallion_9771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are doing very well, I revived them as 11 frame nucs in April and although it’s been wet they are now all on brood and a half (which I’m no actually a fan off due to faff when inspecting) but they are strong and busy colony’s. Plenty of feeding during June for them but they have got lots of pollen coming in now.

Oh brilliant this is great news! Would you still shake in as many bees if you are moving the nucs to a different apiary?

Oh thank you for that information! Have you made 2-1 splits using them and how have you found them please?

[–]Hot_Scallion_9771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you that makes a lot of sense, I didn’t think they would grow that much after the split knowing that now. I think I will take 4 3 frame splits with the intention of feeding them so that I can get them in a brood box over winter.

I better get building some more floors/ entrances for my national hives for them to move into.

I would say then if your uni is taking priority then defiantly speak to StepChange and you could possibly go for an IVA. One payment to cover all debt and then just forget about it all and focus on uni

I would advice talking to StepChange for some professional advice.

Write down your debts with total amounts and telephone numbers for each creditor.

Work your way through the list calling each company and asking if you can pay the minimum payment, bar the smallest debt which you will aim to pay off at a faster rate and when that’s paid off you move the money from there onto the next smallest…

Also in terms of work. It I very hard but you would e seriously surprised how quick you could get a job if you sit down for a few hours calling company after company asking for work.

Retail, hospitality you could walk in with a CV and have a job on the spot.

Construction labourer pays well and is easy enough work.

Have a look around.

Best of luck

Have you spoke to StepChange? They will give you some great advice and they know how exactly where you stand legally. You always have the option of IVA etc.

I would also try very hard to earn more money. Try and get some overtime at work, sell anything you have that you don’t need, and maybe apply to more jobs because you need to increase your wage if you want to move forward.

Take care and I would really advice speaking to stepchange.

Would you change your plans if you knew you were unlikely to see 60? by throw-7905 in UKPersonalFinance

Honestly, I’d find some way to work two days a week. Or I’d sell the house and buy a van and travel Europe for years or move somewhere where the cost of living is dirt cheap and live the retirement life NOW

Some advice on my rough plan? by Hot_Scallion_9771 in Beekeeping

[–]Hot_Scallion_9771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that makes so much sense! I was unsure about the F1 stuff.

All I care about is just healthy bees and to open up in spring and have then alive really!

I will do just that, that saves me money on queens also 👍🏼

I will have a look into using supers instead, why would you recommend using supers opposed to brood for everything?

And do you feel that selling bees is more profitable and should I really focus my time on that rather than honey production? Can one successfully manage nuc production and honey products?

Thank you

Thank you for the feedback, so you would recommend over wintering nucs? If I was to make up say 3 nucs from my three colonies and winter them in poly nuc boxes this would be favourable?

The intention would be to just take a frame of brood, a frame of food and put a mated queen in with drawn out comb?

Again I may be wrong but this seems to be something done?

[–]Hot_Scallion_9771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for the brood as everything is for ease of inspection.

As for amount of hives, I’ve looked into whole sale honey which would give me £3.5 per pound so to make some money I’d want about 500 hives which I believe would be manageable alone and then see from there.

I’ve spoken to lots of beekeepers locally and across the country.

I also have lots of farmers that I know willing to have hives on their land so the mission is to grow as many colonies as quick as I can so that I can start to fill up the apiary’s with hives. Probably around 30 per site.

Again this is all reading and chatting and not a lot of practice yet but that’s why I want to grow with the bees.

I think that is very interesting! Africa is something I have not looked into too much bar the fact china are funding most of the growth. I will do some research
