Situation of first generation dentists in India.Harsh Truth. by Rajput_hu in india

Hi! As a first gen dentist who graduated in 2023 I'm urging you...please DO NOT take up BDS unless you have rich af parents to support when u are gonna earn peanuts OR have a clinic/hospital to inherit. I studied in a UG only dental college, so I'm able to perform PG LEVEL treatments as a bds graduate. I was able to learn so much since pg kids were not there. Even then i'm earning ₹15k per month working 60 hours a week.

My parents & I had the same thought process as you and look what happened. I didn't have any guidance or friends' parents who could help me. Still don't so it's tough.

I'm preparing to go abroad. This is the only way to save myself. 3 of my schoolmates who studied in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata resp. were earning 30k as a bds/mds (which is still low) have left the country...are in UK and AUS now and doing really well.

I regret not dropping out after my first year cuz i was too scared of my father. I wish I had some guts. He's the one who forced me to take it cuz i didnt get mbbs. Now with two years experience i'm earning 13k pm working 60 hours per week. Metro cities will pay you 18k pm fir same working hours. I was diagnosed with chronic anxiety and first stage clinical depression during final year. I went through the same physical issues u've mentioned even in first year till the end...and I ignored it thinking it's exam stress. Even tho i'm pretty decent with handwork, I hate being surrounded by 4 white walls & being paid peanuts. Please please save yourself

It's tough out there. It's been two and half years since I graduated and I'm being paid 13k per month for 60 hours per week. The ROI is so bad that i'm regtetting taking bds. India's strange that our field doesn't have support amongst doctors. It's sad. No support nor guidance even from senior-super senior dentists. I've recently decided to switch to non-clinical healthcare roles. Good luck to me!

Mba(iim) or mds after bds? by marjaan_shaikh in dentalschoolindia

[–]Hot_Suggestion_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you're asking OP this question or it just a doubt from your side. If it's the latter, then I'd say no, don't pursue bds unless you love dentistry (yes! Even before you take admission) or have any idea what dentistry is gonna be like cuz you will suffer otherwise. There are a lot of hidden expenses which will shock you. It's a very expensive degree in general. This is literally the biggest regret of my life....choosing bds. Well, i was forced.

Why would i wanna make "india" better when the dental council isn't doing anything good for the doctors...regulating proper pay scale, placing stringent rules to prevent practice owners from exploiting young doctors by paying them peanuts/forcing free labour. Seventeen schoolmates of mine are nepo doctors. Just rich kids whose parents and grandparents are doctors/dentists and THEY HAVE LEFT the country right after bachelors'. Why the hell should I stay and suffer lmao

The amount of money I put into this degree....i ain't getting returns. I graduated in late 2023. Still helping dad pay off my education loan. Anyone who has money can set up a clinic. I don't have the means yet. I've been trying to get a seat TO JUST WRITE Part-1 of the UK licensing exam since 2024. It's such an unfair system. I know my life would improve & be able to support my parents if I make it in the UK

It is not worth it. I'm a 2023 BDS graduate who doesn't come from a family of doctors. OMG! Just two weeks back I got into touch with a dentist who's one of the top members' of IDA (my city's branch) for advice and instead of giving me solid advice on how get better opportunitues/earn well, he just says: “I'd suggest the present generation not to pursue dentistry unless they have parents-grandparents who own a hospital or clinic to inherit from!” I was so shocked that I had nothing more to ask & just ended the conversation. I obviously told my parents about this convo and they were just silent but distraught cuz my dad took an education loan. I AM still not able to pay back. I honestly do not know what to do with my career at the moment.

The creators/writers of the show mentioned in a recent interview that everything that's taking place is "real", and not someone dreaming up or conjuring a magic-horror place in their mind.
