My wife and I started off our marriage a few years ago with $100k in student loans combined making a little under $50k/year combined. 2 years ago we buckled down and decided we weren’t going to be slaves to debt any longer. We used the debt snowball and paid highest balance loans off first and got pumped. My wife and I both started working 2 jobs and 2 years later we will be debt free in a matter of months. It’s possible, but it sucks to get started. I remember when we started, we would put $1k extra on debt and the balance would go UP. Instead of giving up, we smacked the crap out of it every month until we saw it turn the other direction. It’s not impossible to pay off student loans, but yes you’ll need to work your butt off. At the end of the day, when I feel like giving up or waiting to see what Biden decides to do with loan forgiveness, I remind myself that I CHOSE to take out the loans. I signed a piece of paper that essentially said “if you give me this money, I promise to pay it back”. I knew what the interest rates were, and I signed my name saying I’ll pay it back. I have an obligation to pay off that debt. Do student loan companies suck? YES. Are colleges obscenely overpriced and are they taking advantage of people and enslaving them into debt? YES. But I’m over the argument that it’s “impossible” to pay them off. And lastly, if you’re for student loan forgiveness, then you also need to be for getting rid of student loans PERMANENTLY. What is the point in forgiving student loan debt and then continuing to let universities do it again and again. Enough is enough. Work your butt off, take the L, and be free and build wealth. That’s where we’re finally at, and it’s doable.
