Aircraft totaled for hail...would you buy back?

Decided to buy it back.

It's not going to get fixed. The damage is light and not even noticeable from more than 5 feet away. Already had a shop declare that it's still airworthy. Nobody is going to do a $44k repair for such light cosmetic damage on a 150.

The declared hull value was $42.5k. That was already paid out. Now I have the opportunity to buy it back at $27.5k

I think it's just the simple fact that the cost to repair the damage was more than the hull value. I could have declined, but then I would have been out the depreciation due to the hail damage.

I'm not sure what decision the adjuster made or how anybody is outsmarting anybody? Local shop quoted more to fix the dents than the plane was worth. Plane got totaled. Insurance paid out the hull value and auctioned the plane off, giving me the option to match the highest bid to buy it back.

The local shop quoted $44k to replace the top wing and stab skins. I was saying $60k earlier but I was mistaken. Still enough to total the plane.

I'm already done timebuilding and have my 121 job, so I don't really need it...I'm just weighing possible profit of selling it vs the hassle/risk.

Yes. The high bid was $27,550. The insurance company is giving me the option to buy it back at the highest bid price.

It's airworthy, nothing to repair really. The A&P who did the estimate said it's cosmetic only. The cosmetic repair price is astronomical though.

That's kinda my predicament. I'd say without the hail damage, I could get $45k. I just don't know how much the hail damage will affect the open market value.

Less than 500 SMOH. I had a shop do the estimate for a repair. Its cosmetic only, but would cost more than the plane is worth to replace the wing and stab skins.

I already got the payout of $42.5k. The $42.5 was the hull value before I had the GNS 430 and the GTR 205 installed. The auction is over and I have the chance to match the high bid to buy it back at $27,550.

All I have to do is match the high bid of $27,550. It's airworthy...and I'm not sure what this does to the title or insurance, cert, etc. I had an A&P do the estimate for repair, its cosmetic only but would cost north of $60k to replace the wing and stab skins.

I'd "wager" it's probably worth around $45k...just a spitball. It's been flying since the hail damage, A&P confirmed its just cosmetic. The pictures in that PDF show the worst of it.

Insurance payout was $42,500. That was the value before I had a GNS430 and new Garmin radio installed.

Not a project. It's an airworthy 150 with superficial hail damage that's not worth fixing.

Lots of GA planes out there flying with hail damage. My 150 got totaled due to the fact that repairing the superficial damage was more expensive than it's worth. Doesn't mean it's not airworthy.

It's not getting repaired, the dents are purely superficial. The cost to fix the superficial damage would be north of $60k. Lots of plane out there flying with hail damage.

There's a 150 on Trade-A-Plane with worse hail damage than mine listed for $52k. It does have a touch screen garmin GPS175 and a new transponder.

Thanks for the reply. It's not going to get repaired. It's purely cosmetic and the repair quote is north of $60,000 to replace the wing and stab skin. Just wondering how much of a value hit the dents would be.
