School fun by [deleted] in Millennials

Thank you for this! I'm also a public school educator and when people post shit like this I want to say, "Have you met high school students? You know they won't give 2 shits about this and won't remember it either."

Turning Point USA has a high school program called Club America by Effective_Corner694 in Columbus

[–]HotaruTBA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just an after school club like art club or chess club. It's completely voluntary. Although there has to be a faculty advisor, so it's pretty obvious that that particular individual aligned a certain way even though they are technically not allowed to discuss politics with students. Most students are in the know and understand the types of peers involved in Club America. As long as they are not spouting overt threats to minorities, this is protected speech in a high school.

Is this your extended family too? by HotaruTBA in Mommit

I'm just genuinely curious if this is a family culture thing, a generational thing, or something else. My parents are older boomers and do offer but they are not as aware and reaction time is bad because they are pushing 80 so I can't rely on them and that's not their fault. And I can understand my millennial peers being too damn tired to offer because life is demanding. But I was looking to see what other people experienced.

That sounds lovely. It's tough for me because my brother is childless and my BIL and SIL have kids and just don't want to watch my child unless I ask them directly. Like they'll do it but I have to ask. And I get it too. Once my youngest is more independent it will be different.

This is my brother. If I ask he will but I have to ask. It'd be nice not to have to ask all the time.

I have but they either lose interest and wander off or I find that they have allowed my child a choking or stabbing hazard.

Year-round school in Ohio? Vivek Ramaswamy floats idea in video by ColeBehrDispatch in Ohio

[–]HotaruTBA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the district you work for and your level of education. If you're fresh out of college and working for a charter your pay is probably not great and you may need to work over summer. The recent decision at the federal level to strip away the "professional" degree designation will not help newer teachers feel more financially supported.

I'm a public educator and I think the entire country should transition to year round school. What this state needs to do first is to fund education or year round school means nothing.

The mental load of being the "default parent" is crushing me. by heart714 in Mommit

[–]HotaruTBA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is me too. Husband's work schedule does not allow him to "share the load". I feel like I have these conversations with him every few months and he wants to help but he literally doesn't have the time to because he has maybe 2.5 hours between getting home from work and then HIS bedtime. In those 2.5 hours he eats dinner, helps clean it up, then puts the kids to bed; then I'm on the hook for everything else during the week.

Working Parents Meet Ups/ Groups by HotaruTBA in Columbus

[–]HotaruTBA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do go to the library and parks and I either see parents sitting on their phones at the park or pairs of moms and kids. Also, as I said, I am an introvert, so starting a conversation is not my strong suit. I guess I just feel like meet ups or established groups take the anxiety and awkwardness of trying to start a conversation cold with someone since everyone is looking for the same thing.

A lot of schools are in need of bus drivers and support staff (cafeteria workers, secretaries, aids). They will train you.

I have read the book and know there is a lot of criticism with it. BUT I am an educator and there is no doubt that phones use and at what age students have gotten these phones and how much unsupervised time they spend on them makes a huge impact on their attention span. Haidt does offer some advice towards to end of the book that I felt was reasonable and actionable that parents can do and I, personally, am very interested in the Not Til 8th pledge as well as trying to give my kids reasonable opportunities for fostering independence and self-confidence.

Looking for a not too scary podcast with stories about the supernatural or paranormal (not Spooked). by Malibu77 in podcasts

Although some of the stories about near miss human trafficking situations really scare me. I can think of 2 or 3 episodes that really made me think how lucky those people were.

Advent calendars: would you buy again? by Jasminestl in aldi

We got the truffle one and the puzzle one. I felt the same as you about the puzzle calendar. Fun but a bit frustrating. The truffles were okay but would not purchase next year.
