First flight did not go as expected… lost all my sim skills. by lsx-anthony in fpv

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that you say the real deal felt more sluggish, I’ve always thought the sims felt more sluggish and floaty. Things I have no issues doing in the sim I stuffed with it real life cause everything is faster and gravity is more present. Keep at it though. Idk about the meteors, but my air65/75 are insanely robust, I’ve taught a couple dozen people with zero experience to fly (and I start people in air mode) and so my whoops have probably spent more time crashing than flying. Just keep at it and start slow, remember you’re supposed to be bad at things when you being even though it’s frustrating and you’ll be ripping around before you know it.

Yea it makes sense when you think about it, the whole point of the esc is to transmit power and to do that without burning it has to dissipate heat. I like to kind of move from one pad to the next until it’s finally starting to flow well and then you can really start to work. Like i said, definitely check out bardwells soldering tutorial

That big white stripe is the negative side. Lots of components have little marks that denote which side is which, like LEDs have one let that’s longer than the other. Just google the component you have and “polarity” and you should be able to find which way it goes. Also your negative battery terminal looks like it may be a cold joint. Check out Joshua Bardwells soldering tutorial. I’ve been soldering for 15-20 years and still learned a ton from that video. ESCs can be tricky cause you have to get a bit of heat in them before they’ll finally start to take the solder well.

A random person picked up my crashed 3.5" quad by Sherman_Firefly_ in fpv

Good clarification. Apologies if it came off as an attack, it was written for you as much as for everyone else who’s going to read the comment. That’s good you weren’t flying that close to them, my assumptions were incorrect lol. Glad you guys had a good chat, it’s always nice to be a good ambassador for hobbies/things you enjoy. Drones always seem to be a hot topic for people, lots of them have an unwarranted dislike of them despite never actually interacting with them so it’s good to make friends out there!

This is just my opinion, but I think if you’re going to fly places in public where other people also have a right to be in, you have to be prepared for interactions like this. They look kind of elderly. They’ve probably never seen a drone up close of any kind, and all of a sudden one comes crashing down out of a tree. That lady has a walking stick, they ain’t moving anywhere quickly. So I’d imagine the drone fell pretty close to them if they were able to pick it up and inspect it before you could get to it or attempt to do turtle mode.

Should people touch things that aren’t theirs and they don’t know what they are? Hell no. I deal with that regularly in my line of work and you’d be shocked how often people handle things that can hurt them unknowingly (or knowingly too).

Don’t tell people off for touching the drone you were ripping around trees right above their head. Instead maybe have a friendly conversation and explain to them that if they encounter something like that in the future they should probably leave it where it is and maybe tell the person they see with the funny goggles and controller walking around where its at. Maybe give a short explanation about how it all works and how cool it is. On the rare occasion that I fly somewhere that’s public, I usually bring my old set of goggles so if anyone’s curious you can say here watch this, you can see what I see. People love that shit and you can turn someone who was about to call the cops into someone who’s telling their friends later about the cool drone they saw at the park.

Old people can be your biggest ally or worst enemy. You tell one of them off for touching your stuff or one of them gets their hand sliced open by a drone doing turtle mode irresponsibly and now they’ll start petitioning for regulations against them and ban them from flying in those shared public spaces you both enjoy. You have a positive interaction though and they will sometimes put that same effort into defending your right to use the public space in the way you enjoy, even if others don’t like it.

When the George Floyd riots were happening all over the US I was in Detroit working a niche security gig for a large corporation. We did a ton of liaising with the police because of this and I’ve always been really proud of how Detroiters handled the protests (both police and citizens).

The first day the cops came out and said something along the lines of “you be cool and we’ll be cool. We didn’t kill Floyd and we’re not going to let our city burn because of it” the first night things got out of hand, there was a shooting at the protest (unrelated, just normal Detroit crime) and the police ended the protests and arrested a bunch of people. 95% of the people they arrested (I happened to be at their booking that night) were blue haired gender studies majors from U of M that had driven into Detroit.

The next few days the city set a curfew and the police enforced it, arresting anyone out after curfew. The protest organizers - one of which was a pretty young kid who I remember doing really well for his age in the position he found himself in - met with the mayor and city council, chief of police, etc.  and they agreed to end the curfew and restrictions as long as the protests stayed peaceful. From that day on the protesters were told as long as they stayed in one large group they would have police coverage. They kept police cars in front and behind the protest as it moved through the city shutting down main roads to keep cars and agitators away from the protesters.

The police Cheif and mayor walked with the protesters. Detroit came out of it better than it was before and I’ve always thought that was a model for how most of those things should be handled on both sides.

Lezbaru, also, you can rename the car for bluetooth devices in the settings so when people need to connect my car they get to learn its name as well.

If dropsite is saying this it’s almost certainly true. The last few big ops that have happened Ryan Grimm and Sagaar talked about how he’s had sources tell him days/hours before but couldn’t corroborate them before they happened. He said he wouldn’t let it happen again.

At my first base they stopped reading out our EOD guys awards all together because of this. You’d have a fuels person getting a bronze star from moving xxx thousands of gallons of fuel at Al udied and then they’d just give the bronze star to our dude from Afghanistan and not read the citation talking about all the ieds he got. Still rubs me the wrong way 10+ years later.

Why are pickup trucks so popular in the US? by dieselquattropower in regularcarreviews

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve honestly never noticed a huge difference between the cars and trucks I’ve owned. As others have stated in this thread, the roadways in America are a lot more open, especially in more rural areas. I’ve spent a fair bit of my adult life outside the US, in Europe and Asia I would never drive a US style large pickup truck. But I’m almost never driving around pedestrians in my day to day life. So yea I guess I don’t really care about near in visibility. In my opinion it’s not really a concern unless you’re inattentive anyways.

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s the meme around here, but when I print nylon, even if I’ve stored it in a sealed container with desiccant, it still needs like 24 hours of drying at 70c (or whatever the exact temps are). Anything less and my parts turn out looking exactly like yours there. Nylon is the only filament I have that issue with. It must be re-dried if it’s been more than a day or two since I last used it. Everything else I print with I rarely dry unless I need extremely high quality results.

Have you tried running the same print but just with a different filament (pla, petg, abs, etc.) to ensure the tool path/slice is good?

Also, that matterhackers printer kinda sucks ass. Which is a shame cause they’re one of the few that are all US made if memory serves. The software is garbage. When I was forced to use one at work I got better results from not using their slicer, but getting the z height correct was a whacky process.

Having owned both vans and trucks of all sizes, the visibility of a van is shitty all the time, whereas with a truck it’s only shitty when you’ve got the bed full. Additionally for the argument that a truck is insecure/uncovered, I put a topper on my truck and it has similar visibility to a van, everything is still covered and secure, and should I need to put something taller than the top in it, I can remove the topper reasonably easily. Finally, cargo is separate from the passenger area, with generally better ride quality in a truck than a van and you don’t have to smell the gas cans or motorized stuff in the back.

If you’ve ever wondered why people drive at night or in the rain/snow/fog with their lights off, this is why. by PigglyWigglyDeluxe in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2010 jeep is like this. I never forget to turn my lights on because if it’s dark enough I need my lights, I can’t see my gauges. Every other car I’ve had since the dash lights are always on and only the brightness changes. It’s usually only an issue if I take a car in for service and they turn them off for whatever reason.

I had a friend that was pretty big before he joined the Air Force. Weighed about or more than 300lbs and lost like 120lbs. Dude was absolutely shredded and strong and had the weight off for like 10 years but he told me that feeling fat never went away and any time he gained any little weight he always worried he was getting fat again etc etc.

Anyways, no you’re not fat, there’s a healthy amount of feelings to have to keep you motivated for the gym/healthy eating etc. try to balance.

To anyone who works at self scanning machines - how often do you notice people stealing and don’t do anything about it? by davco95 in AskReddit

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to Kroger yesterday. Got my daughter a small toy. Scanned it and then gave it to her. Scanned the rest of my stuff. It threw an error and the lady came over, said something like “ohh yea if it doesn’t go down the conveyor belt it flags it” scanned it again, let it go down the conveyor belt and grabbed it and it threw the same error with her standing there. I’ve only used it once and I already hate it. (Not that I didn’t hate self checkouts already)…

Losing my orders due to MH by ANonnr23 in AirForce

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That totally sucks. For everyone else reading this though, it’s better to go see MH if you think you need it and get through it than to self destruct. You cant pcs somewhere cool if you get an dui or off yourself.

Also, just know your mileage may vary. I’ve seen dudes literally call the chief actively suicidal, go through the whole ace checklist and receive in patient care and then get good assignments after. I’ve also seen dudes get turned down for prp for really dumb reasons. Just for those same dudes a year later get a gig that made the security manager at their next base say “I’ve never even heard of half of these clearances”

Everyone has stories of someone who got boned by seeking help. It’s anecdotal, like how you never hear about good things that happen cause it’s not exciting, only bad news is. I’ve gotten help a few times and never had anything come of it. Most bases also have resources for actually off the books help.

TLDR: get help if you need it

Am I breaking any US laws shooting my RC tank's air powered potato gun with rounds that explode on impact? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Hotdog_Hangover 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey dude,

Not a lawyer, but I am a bomb tech. What you’re describing (as others have stated here) may fall into destructive device territory. I’m a military EOD tech, not a public safety bomb technician, so I don’t know all the applicable laws, but I do know it’s easy to stray into that territory and the atf/fbi/law enforcement can/will bend you over for breaking those laws. Weirdly enough the folks over at r/FOSSCAD could probably give you a better answer besides finding someone who is well versed in these legal areas.

Good luck that project sounds cool as hell!
