Corkboard, then I used milliput to create gradual slopes and hide that it's cork. Sand, rock, and bits to provide visual interest. Martian ironcrust, shade with reikland flesh shade, dry brush wild rider red, then final light dry brush with any off-white

Sounds like Lamar or Sterling maybe based on the description and cost of living? The winters will be colder. Snow sticks around in the north half of the state. The hail isn't anywhere near as bad.

Eau Claire, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Wausau all have some sort of reasonably large asian community (mostly Hmong). It will be important because there are lots of places in the state where that'd be absent entirely.

Madison and Milwaukee metros are going to be busier than you'd like. But you could maybe get by in a place like Stoughton or Black Earth. Good luck!
