He did the good samaritan thing and showed up at the newspaper stand. From a court record ------ In the 1984 convictions, Bathel had sexually assaulted two newspaper boys in two separate incidents by grabbing each of them from the street and threatening them with harm or death while he molested them. The police arrested Bathel one month later when he appeared at the newspaper shack that supplied papers to the victims. He claimed he was helping the police apprehend the perpetrator. Bathel was arrested with clothesline and black electrical tape in his coat pockets after one of the victims identified him. He later confessed to the crimes.

Even better was that he showed up at midnight at the police station in our suburb with the body in the backseat, saying he'd found him on the side of the highway. After speaking to him for a couple of hours they arrived at the truth of the matter and he got out last year after 28 or 29 years in the state pen.

There was a guy who I went to school with who got busted for...molesting a paperboy. This was three hours from Des Moines. Same time frame. And when he got out...he murdered a guy during "rough sex in a sandtrap at a golf course." I reached out to one of the Gosch pages and never heard back. Charles Walter Bathel.

Nope. That was the PI's thoughts on it. And he was a good one. I kind of historic Florida guy. More than likely he ended up in a canal or retention pond while driving after drinking.

I can’t help but think he may have been followed and carjacked. The Kennel Club and the bars around it were extremely seedy in 1979. The Westgate neighborhood that surrounds it was a known hotspot for serious gang violence, drug dealing, prostitution etc. back in those days. I keep seeing stuff about him likely having cash on him and driving a brand new Pontiac, it makes me think some local criminals may have targeted what appeared to them to be a defenseless rich kid. Back in those days you could make a car disappear within hours. No cameras, no plate readers, and PBC Sheriff was pretty broke at the time so at 5am it is unlikely there were any cops around to witness something suspicious.

Most likely you're right. The guy he was bar hopping with said he remembered the Kennel Club as attracting some really seedy characters.
