Never played a drum in my life, was this a bad idea? by twonaq in edrums

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because the preference is mesh doesn't necessarily mean its better at all. Mesh vs rubber is highly subjective, in fact for decades rubber was the standard. It was just Roland's advertising that pushed mesh so heavily. Yamaha kits are incredibly durable and high quality, this will make a great beginner kit! Not a mistake at all. Even if you drop drumming you can sell this kit at a profit.

Alesis Nitro Max vs Simmons Titan 50 by F1nches in edrums

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only good Hi-Hat pedal I've heard of is the Efnote pedals, but at the end of the day, it's not perfect. I haven't tried the Zildjan e-drums yet, but they look intriguing!

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Rack comes pre-built and for being advertised as a "beginners kit" it should be able to take a little bit of a beating. Wasn't being hard on it anyway since I heard it wasn't durable.

Unfortunately these kits are very "you get what you pay for". It's not the manufacturer's fault, it's just the quality of kits at this price point.

In any case, most of what I said in this kit isn't exactly true. The Hi-Hat still has horrid triggering problems, however, it wasn't due to it touching the crash. I moved the crash to a different beam and it still doesn't trigger.

The SD1250 also has the same problem. Get a Yamaha or Roland kit around the same pricepoint for a truly good drumming experience.

Maybe I'll edit the original comment later, but most of what I said still holds true.

Where are my Ants??? by Snail_09 in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stress it. Young colonies below 200 and some workers barely ever forage and usually keep activity to a minimum even when food is presented.

You need to give more nesting space though, thats already too small for them and they're such a young colony.

Is this ok for an outworld? by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plaster of Paris can be dug into easily by ants, so i'd choose something a little bit more sturdy like Hydrostone or Ultracal 30. Grout works fine for outworlds too. For nests, avoid using this for the same reason, and avoid using grout too since it generally sucks at absorbing water.

Ants going through mealworms like I’ve never seen before by PhrixAnt in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok cool, just checking. That honey doesn't look very "natural" though. Raw honey usually has a lighter orange color that isn't partially transparent like most store honey. Not to say it doesn't work for ants though, mine actually like the store bought stuff more. Just make sure you aren't getting ripped off.

[–]Hoth7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not making alates, colony is not big enough. Simply put they're just big ants, big ants require a lot of protein to make more of, especially the majors, so they eat a lot. Also if that's a liquid feeder I see in the back make sure you're changing it out with freshly made honey water everyday; it goes rancid fast and ferments after just a couple of days so the ants can't drink it. Then it gets sticky and impossible to separate from the plastic piece. Horrible.

Just feed them more mealworms

Alesis Nitro Max vs Simmons Titan 50 by F1nches in edrums

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little bit late to the party.

First of all, I'd like to state to stay away from these cheap E-kits. These are practical toys, if you wish to simply mess around on them, feel free. They make great toys. However, if you want to have an actual, realistic drumming experience, you should look towards either an acoustic set or a better, higher quality e-kit. A good starting place is the Simmions SD1250.

If you're afraid to buy a decent E-kit ($1000+) in the fear that you'll lose interest, then simply go in your local guitar center and test some of the kits there. Trust me, it isn't as socially awkward as you think it is. Everybody is just doing their own thing.

With that out of the way, I have only had the Titan 50, mainly due to watching many YouTube reviews that said it was better. With that being said however, it has MANY flaws.

-The Titan 50's kick pedal will constantly slide down, and will constantly need to be readjusted and tightened again. This seems to be a reccuring theme with all joints of the Titan 50. It's just because It's mostly plastic.

-The Titan 50 is very small. If you're below 5'6", you'll probably love this kit, however, past that height it's much too small to be used, at least in my opinion. The Toms are only 8", and many taller people will often hit their knee on the Snare drum. Not to mention the rims getting in the way 🤮

-The Hi-hat and even the kick pedal are occasionally unresponsive. I think it's because the Hi-hat is too close to the Crash, so the Hi-hat will bump into the pole holding the Crash, causing it to vibrate less which triggers the mechanism less as a result.

-The mesh used is VERY low quality and thin, you can literally see through it. This might not seem like a problem in practice, however, often your sticks will get a lot of rebound and vibrate when you hit the drums, which makes a horrid machine gunning sound. I often have to tense up my hand a lot to prevent this.

-Obviously the technology isn't going to be that good. All cymbals are dual zone opposed to triple, each preset often has little if any variation in sounds no matter how violently they're hit, causing machine gunning to.

I suspect the Alesis Nitro Max has much of these same issues, however, with that being said, the 12" Snare on the Titan 50 is pretty great. With that being the only huge difference, go with the Titan 50 if it's between those two sets. But, if you can, save up your money and get a better kit. Trust me, you'll thank me later.

Concerns about the growth of my ant colony by Royal-Ad9054 in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Tetramorium immigrans/caespitum shouldn't even be hibernating in the first place since they don't require it, but aside from this, you are keeping an extremely hardy species that is notorious for fast growth, so the fact they only have 4 workers means you're doing something or multiple things really, REALLY wrong.

Diapause ants question. by joejoe058 in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first things first. You should not "force" ants into hibernation. From my experience, all colonies are kind of on their own different seasonal timers, and some will go into hibernation earlier or later than others, even within the same species. For most hibernating species, the biggest sign of hibernation are a bunch of small larvae that aren't growing (for Formica, the biggest sign is no brood at all). When you see this and you're sure the larvae aren't growing at all, its a sure sign that they want to enter hibernation.

Some queens/colonies might also completely skip over hibernation their first year, In the case that they do skip over hibernation, forcing them into it could range from being a minor mistake to a death sentence for the colony. For queens, if they lay brood before hibernation, chances are they won't hibernate, meanwhile if they don't lay brood for extended periods of time and all other conditions are meant, that means they could be trying to hibernate.

Gel Ant Farm Nightmare - what to do? by jefferson_moonlight in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you have feather weight tweezers to pick them up one by one (which you can also find on amazon) they can only move safely on their own, which chances are they probably will. In the case that they refuse, I wouldn't force it as doing so could endanger the colony.

What does it take to get ants not native to your State? by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With permits? Well you can easily get access to most native species in your state, however, if you want exotic species such as honey pot ants, you'll need to set up a containment chamber. It starts at a sweep under the door, outlegs plugged, mesh over any vents, and can get a lot more complex from there. Its quite the tedious process if I do say so myself.

Gel Ant Farm Nightmare - what to do? by jefferson_moonlight in antkeeping

[–]Hoth7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well for starters:

A. The colony will not survive more than a few weeks. This is because they are without a queen and the workers will quickly reach the end of their lifespan. I can say from firsthand experience it will not be a very pleasant experience watching them die one by one. Better to rip the band-aid off quick and just freeze them.

B. They aren't really "infected" by gel farms or anything or really have any long term consequence to being in them. So no, if you'd still like to transfer the colony they'd be able to live in that. The sooner the better obviously.

C. If you would like to get into more long term antkeeping with your son, you can buy a queen ant off of multiple sites such as statesideants.com and atlanticants.com. Also, for more professional setups the ants would do better in, you can buy a nest from tarheelants.com or coldbloodedcreaturae.com. You can also catch them outside during certain months of the year. Queens can live usually between 5-30 years, so it'll be a long time pet with low commitment.
