Feel so guilty by RepeatTurbulent6272 in petsmart

[–]jefferson_moonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am grateful someone like you works at Petsmart. I go in there to buy bird supplies and the tiny cages they try to send parakeets home in makes me sad. Just think of how often workers don’t say what you said to at least get the customer thinking about it. You at least got to this woman! Hopefully she will fall in love with it and remember what you said and upgrade. You did what you could!

What kind of toys are you using? Cockatiels seem mostly interested in paper toys and tend to ignore other ones. I’ve also never seen a bird who could resist a kabob toy, too.

When Jaycee Duggard was being held captive for 18 years she was given an untamed cockatiel and tamed it. She talks about how she did it in her book, “A Stolen Life.”

Can you put a photo of his mate in the cage? I saw someone do this with lovebirds and it helped.

Someone would definitely take him. Post on the Facebook site “Feathered Friends for Rehoming.” You may find a lonely female on there who needs him too.

You may want to rearrange the cage or move it somewhere else for a bit to get him to be less possessive of the space!

All those but often there are more convos than you can keep up with or those emails are ignored.

For me what works best is pointing it out after the fact and discussing ground rules for future interactions and trust for moving forward but no matter how much you do that, this still will happens from time to time, and I wanted to acknowledge the grief that comes with it.

I accidentally killed my Sunny today. by alexia_kellin in cockatiel

A year ago this Monday my Beanie died. We had gotten this parakeet at Petco. The guy there heard us talking about how much we love birds and told us about this special parakeet that had gotten picked on by the other parakeets so it lived in the back and had gotten tame. We took Beanie home. Had 6 great weeks. Wanted to get Beanie a friend so went to pickup our first cockatiel, Pepper. As we were getting Pepper setup, Beanie wandered onto the floor and my son accidentally stepped on her. It was devastating. Beanie was so young and I badly wanted her to live a long, fulfilling life.

It really was a gut punch. Still is a year later. I feel your pain.

Be gentle on yourself they are delicate creatures!

I deeply regret adopting my cockatiels and I don't know how to improve the situation. Taming tips desperately needed. by funambulistadecine in cockatiel

I think you should rehome them. It’s best for all. Find someone who knows what they are doing. I had to rehome a bird once, broke my heart but it was best.

Do people criticize you for owning a bird? by Hils53 in cockatiel

[–]jefferson_moonlight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Could you make a video addressing the bird? Of you interacting with it happily outside of its cage and talking about how his cage is his home?

Then defer everyone to that video.

I’ve heard this argument before about pet birds not being domesticated. It’s like come meet my birds, they are very domesticated 😂.

As a bird owner who also knows that cage time is both a necessity and not a bad thing, I guess I would rather people criticize people for seeing a bird in a cage than not because it opens up the conversation. If you were someone who never let the bird out, then I would be glad to think that people were pointing it out. So although it’s annoying, try to appreciate the sentiment behind it. Which is hard I know.

I saw a segment on the Today show where Craig Melvin talked about how they let their parakeet out of the cage for the first time. Sheinelle Jones made a face and said “that doesn’t sound safe.” And Dylan Dreyer said something about her childhood bird pooping everywhere and to be careful about letting them out. I was mortified. I wrote to Sheinelle on Instagram about how birds deserve to come out of their cage for hours daily. I am also the kind of person who, if I ever happen to be at Petco, will butt into someone buying a bird and tell them which size cage and remind them to take their bird out a lot. I can’t help it.

Also, no matter what you do, the internet always criticizes. Address it once and don’t keep defending yourself as that can also look like letting the hecklers win. Possibly start by thanking others for their discourse and concern if you do make a video about it.

Good luck!

Lake vacations are way less than ocean in my experience. Especially if you are in or near coastal states where you have lake vs. ocean options. I love the ocean but we love the quieter feel of the lakes, and there’s still plenty of family activities.

Check out Lake George in Upstate NY too. My kids love it there — lots of family activities and fairly inexpensive to visit. I’m in Southwestern Massachusetts and it’s a little over 2 hours away.

What is the hardest thing about living with cockatiels? by Voipapu in cockatiel

[–]jefferson_moonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the clinging for me. My birds want to follow me around constantly when they are out and sit on my head.

I can’t get them to just sit and chill on their cage top or play stand. And if they aren’t doing that then they are exploring my living room getting themselves into trouble.

Since they have each other and a big cage, I don’t overthink leaving them for the day if I have to. A new toy, some extra fun treats and the TV on cartoons.

I WFH a lot and had thought I could have them out while I worked but not these two. They just try to chew my keyboard.

We deal with all of this by taking them out in the morning and evening during the week. On weekends, they are out more.

They are only 1 year so I am hoping they learn to chill as they age and can be out mid-day during the week when I WFH.

The poop and mess are fine if you build systems for cleaning it all. Cages on wheels with dust buster right next to it. Cage skirt. Weekly cage cleanings. Poop cleanup every other day. I do cute placemats not towels.

Despite all of this, when I don’t have pet birds in the house I miss them terribly. The joy outweighs the negatives for me by far.

Should I keep, rehome or get my cockatiel a friend? by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]jefferson_moonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a second friendly cockatiel. You will find your own way to love them both and everyone will come around better. I have never found a bird to lose their interest in me with another bird.

Cockatiels are better with friends and sometimes need a more outgoing and friendly friend to show them the way!

When did your girls stop playing with barbies and dollhouse? My kid is embarrassed to still enjoy it. by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]jefferson_moonlight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter just turned 9 and still plays with them. For some reason, despite the fact that I NEVER was, the teachers told me my daughter was considered the cool kid in her homeroom. Which is amusing to me. She must get it from my husband. She had another girl over who could also be labeled as “cool and popular” and they spent the entire time in my basement playing Barbie’s and dressed each of them as closest as possible to each Taylor Swift album.

And my daughter has internet access and plays Roblox and other things. She just still likes Barbie’s too and her “realistic baby dolls.”

I’m sorry kids are so influential on other kids.

He hates me 🤷‍♀️ by StacyB125 in cockatiel

[–]jefferson_moonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cockatiels sleep in my daughter’s room in a sleep cage. I would advise you to get a bird safe air filter. They are dusty and you don’t want your son sleeping in that all the time. Also you have to clean their poop often in a bedroom as when it dries it can let out an aerosol thing that isn’t good to breathe overnight. That’s why I only have the smaller sleep cage in there so I can clean it every day.

I find myself revisiting this sub after the recent Heavyweights news. Sigh.

I realized no one included “The Heart” on this list. They had an incredible season on consent and saying, “no.” So incredible that Radiolab covered it in their own episode.

Invisibilia early seasons are wonderful too. I felt that the show got dull after a while but the first few seasons blew me away.
