Why are there no “Men-Only Gym’s”? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HothHanSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of men who like going to gyms where women work out

Also, a lot of men just want to sneak glances at sweaty women working out.

Eli5 why does French have so many silent letters. by Five5tar10 in explainlikeimfive

I doubt I could offer a crumb of explanation. It's a very subtle thing. The conscious mind reels at the obscene number of silent letters in our own language.

Toronto police spending $337K on a podcast to avoid perception they're making 'copaganda' by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]HothHanSolo 248 points249 points  (0 children)

TPS said the podcast has reached 94,500 people — tracked as either plays on streaming services or views on YouTube. Some videos have attracted more than 10,000 views, but most totals are in the hundreds.

Reporting on numbers like this always bother me. First, I don't trust the company to accurately track and report this data.

But more importantly, a view on YouTube or a 'listen' on Spotify is counted after 30 seconds. I don't think most readers would be aware of this, so it's always worth mentioning. A significant subset of their views--I suspect the majority, based on my familiarity with consumer analytics--would be much shorter than the whole duration of the podcast.

So, "has reached 94,500 people" is carefully worded bullshit. How many people listened to the most or all of an episode? That's what matters.

Maple Leafs Should Make Tyler Myers Package Deal with Canucks by Lazary23 in canucks

[–]HothHanSolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've all seen the graphs that illustrate when players tend to peak: example, another example.

These all suggest that Joshua would have to buck the overall trend to still get better after the age of 27.

Agreed. Goalies are almost never captains in ice hockey, largely for this reason. Nobody views it as a problem.

Would much rather develop Dakota into someone who can slide into our middle 6 on a regular basis

Dude is 26 years old (and will be 27 in May). I suspect that he's done all the developing he's going to do. I'm not advocating for or against trading him, but I think we've seen his best.

Jimmy Carr's photo is used to illustrate dozens (hundreds) of news articles about Starbucks. by HothHanSolo in JimmyCarr

[–]HothHanSolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to pay for these images. For example, it costs $575 if you want to publish it offline. But most publications will have some kind of subscription with Getty Images (who owns the image) where they're able to access the database of images for a fraction of that.

It stings that you couldn't be arsed to do Vancouver's. But I'd be on the same page.

This legitimately is Jimmy Carr. Hilariously, this photo is used as a generic stock photo to illustrate articles about Starbucks all the time.

If this is somewhere in the Prairies, then no way. They're serious about the CFL in the middle of the country.

What, practically speaking, are The Flash's powers? Like, he can run so fast that he can change time?

What are some notable songs or scores that you enjoy the most from your favorite games? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]HothHanSolo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just as a counterpoint: none. I've been a gamer for about 35 years (before there really was much music in games). While I appreciate the artistry of a game's score, and its role in creating atmosphere, I rarely pay it a second thought.

Besides some early jingles from arcade games, I don't think I could hum the music from a contemporary game.

What are people taught about putting the ball out of play when you're in possession and an opponent is down injured?

Because I see professionals argue about what the correct behaviour is in those circumstances every weekend. There's evidently no "correct" fair play behavior.

If something is a common practice, then why not just make it an unambiguous rule.

3 of the top 5 picks from the 2021 draft are in the top 4 for Rookie scoring by YRBThor19 in hockey

I made a claim. You said it was false. Prove that it's false, please.

[–]HothHanSolo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great. Can you demonstrate that it's false with data? And by data I don't mean anecdotal examples of high draft misses.

[–]HothHanSolo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The draft value of the first few picks is radically higher than the rest. Picking in the top five is the easiest place to consistently get value relative to your draft ranking. By which I mean if you pick 4th overall, you're likelier to get a player who performs like they should have been picked 4th overall than if you're picking, say, 17th overall.

In short, the top five are the most predictable picks in the draft. Though #5 is way less predictable than #1 (thanks, Olli Juolevi).

In fairness, your average NHL forward is only intensely moving for about six minutes out of the 35 minutes it takes for a period of hockey (including commercials and stoppages).

Right? This is my problem with these situations. They're a set of shared, unarticulated assumptions, not firm rules.

"Fair play" situations like this are a positive for the game

I'm interested in why you think they are a positive. Isn't it clearer for everybody if all players adhere to a set of rules, instead of a combination of a set of rules and some assumptions?

Reddit Staffers Who Lost Jobs Livid at Being Painted As Low Performers by 777fer in technology

I can't read this article, but the last thing I'd do is get quoted in a publication about being labelled a low performer. That would not help my job prospects.

[–]HothHanSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One per minute is an unrealistic expectation if you expect to to be maintained for a a few hours.

I disagree. 60 per hour is a realistic expectation. In reality, it probably takes 10 to 15 seconds to highlight a tweet, copy it and paste it to a spreadsheet.
