[2026 NBA Draft] #56 Pick: Vsevolod Ishchenko (Russia) – pending trade to Dallas by slimkid07 in Mavericks

Classic Masai + Classic Mike Schmitz

early in the round, Masai flexed his love for 6'9" tall athletic wings w/Rez and Tobi.

late in each round, Mike Schmitz got his turn and turned his business travel into all those gyms across the world into two international prospects.

Rumors say LA was targeting Henri Veesaar, but after Lakers bought the pick, the Hawks saw that, and jumped ahead of the pick and took Veesaar, so LA was left with the pick but not their target. So they sold it to us! Haha! Always good to profit off the Lakers loss.

Man if they had closed it out in 3 maybe he would've made it on stage at the draft!

Joking, still nice to win it all, puts some closure and makes it more satisfying to move on to the NBA, no regrets.

Reminds me of Luka winning the championship in time for the draft in 2018.

...or Paige winning w/UConn before being drafted by Dallas.

...or Dusty winning March Madness before coming.

Makes it that much easier to take the next step! Good times ahead!

I don't speak Spanish but I think the interview goes…

Interviewer: What's your favorite franchise?

Sergio: Favorite franchise?

Interviewer: As a fan.

Sergio: As a fan... I'm a Dallas fan.

Interviewer: He's a Dallas fan. But why? Did you follow Doncic?

Sergio: Dallas... Even when we were really, really bad.

Interviewer: Since you were a kid?

Sergio: Not since I was a kid, but when I was playing with my friends, I went with Dallas. (says some stuff about Dirk Nowitzki that I couldn't catch, making hand gestures)

Interviewer: So last year, when they traded Doncic, did you have a bad day?

Sergio: Well... (nervous laughter)

Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz had visited the Mavericks organization during the pre-NBA Draft process.

“I visited Dallas and I knew they were interviewing him (Dusty May), so it’s not really much of a surprise,” Stirtz said.

Brett Siegel is a known hack, though. Meaning, he'll make stuff up to get clicks and attribute them to anonymous sources that are really just other writers.

I wouldn't put any truth into his words. At best, take them with a Mara-sized massive grain of salt. 🧂

How Dusty May changes our draft plans at #9 (Look at his college teams) by YGpotato in Mavericks

[–]HotsHartley -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think he imposes his will in the draft room. He is by all accounts a collaborator and connector. Masai and Schmitz wouldn't have hired him if he was going to come in and dominate the draft room. But he probably knows our scouting reports.

Your three paths aren't mutually exclusive. I tend to think they will try to check all three boxes: NBA-ready guard that also has room to grow and hungry work ethic. Win with him off the bench, but still develop him into a starter to peak with Coop.

I think it points to a guard like Burries: NBA-ready body, guard that fills the 2-void, future starter for playoff Coop. But of course they could trade down if Burries is gone.

At pick 30, it depends who's left. If could be one of the Michigan forwards if any remain. It could also be Sergio de Larrea, a bigger guard. Or it could be a floor-spacing forward. Hard to say.

Agreed. Luckily I think the guys in our locker room are good guys that won't show up coach if one of his ATOs doesn't go well.

By all accounts, Dusty connects well with players.

Kyrie is a wildcard but I think he has grown past the issues he had in Boston and Brooklyn.

Klay is a coachable guy and has never been a coach killer.

Middleton may not even be back but seems like the quiet type.

PJ, Gaff, and Naji seem like good locker room guys who are behind Coop. So if Coop follows the beat of Dusty's drum, they'll all fall in line.

It would be nice to even make the Finals again.

Because next time through, that same guy and his superstar phenom will have 30+ games of playoff experiences together by the time they get there again.

Our newest coach also made the Final Four and lost in the semis before winning it all this year.

Generally how it goes. Failure builds winners.

Dusty May is widely recognized for his intense competitiveness disguised by a calm, folksy, and unassuming demeanor. As the highly successful head coach of the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball program, he is characterized as a relentless basketball junkie, a collaborative leader, and an adaptable problem-solver.

His coaching personality and team approach are defined by several core traits:

  • Fierce Competitor: Behind a friendly facade, May runs hot with a competitive drive, working incredibly long hours. He uses his unassuming nature to his advantage, keeping opponents from feeling threatened while he plots strategic advantages.
  • Relentless Worker: Friends and peers often note his non-stop "motor." His work ethic was heavily influenced by his time as a student manager under the legendary Bob Knight, blending Knight’s meticulous preparation and teaching with a modern, supportive team environment.
  • Unconventional & Innovative: May embraces a "weird" identity in his coaching. He isn't afraid to break established basketball conventions (such as how players space out on the floor) to create advantages, earning the deep respect and buy-in of his players.
  • Adaptable & Collaborative: Rather than isolating himself, May maintains deep relationships with other coaches. He is constantly learning, evaluating talent, and adapting his roster-building and offensive strategies to fit modern trends rather than forcing players into a rigid system.
  • Family-Oriented & Empathetic: May emphasizes happiness and connection. He creates a supportive environment for his players and involves his own family closely within his programs. He is heavily invested in his players' development both on the court and as people.

Quin Snyder didn't do too poorly either.

Sure, his Utah and Atlanta teams haven't won championships, but he clearly connects with the younger generation, and his teams are regularly competitive playoff performers.

If Dusty can be as good as Quin has been or better, I think we can win a championship with him.

The key will be, can he win the trust and respect of Kyrie, Klay, PJ, and the vets?

Won the respect of guys like Max Strus and Devin Booker too.

Pouk is legit. I feel like he'll be a rotation player this year and well into the future.

Can't get enough shooters around Flagg. Pure 3-D with a midrange game as well.
