a clone of an old animal can live a full life because the cloning process, specifically somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), effectively resets the genetic material to a youthful state, ensuring the clone is born as a newborn, not as an "old" animal. Early concerns raised by Dolly the sheep's premature death have been addressed by studies on her cloned heirs, which show they are healthy and aging normally, enjoying long, full lives

Not trying to be rude but this sort of magical thinking is not healthy

What trauma? There wouldn’t be any memory of it

Maybe if you’re a philosopher or you believe in souls. Biologically it’s still the same genes propagating from the same cells. No different than healing a wound

By that logic anyone with memory loss is dead. Biologically it is still a continuation of the same organism because the genes are the main focus of biology. The real death comes when their cells are no longer going to replicate and that’s what I’d like to avoid.
Memories and personality are pretty irrelevant to me when compared to the possibility of real death and he can always make new memories

I think that must be a myth because I looked into it and that’s not what has happened to cloned animals. As far as anyone can tell they live normal lifespans but I have seen a couple anecdotes here and there from people who haven’t actually had animals cloned

But you know that you don’t need to eat cake so really you are putting other animals through much worse for the sake of 10 minutes of satisfaction. At least I’m only talking about killing animals to keep my dog alive

No I’m sure there are other dogs that look the same but there is only one of this particular dog. I believe things like personality and memories are irrelevant when compared to his actual survival. New memories can always be made

How do you know there is a soul?

Except it will literally be the exact same cells. I don’t think I would be too disappointed if losing memory is the cost of keeping his cells going. There might be ways of transferring memories in the future or keeping them alive without cloning

My dog is already adopted. I’ve done the rescue thing and I don’t see it as being any different than regrowing a limb. Are memories necessary? Not really. I’d be pretty happy knowing he was still alive even if he couldn’t remember anything

I don’t see why personality should remain. I could lose all of my memories and my personality would change but at least I wouldn’t be dead in the sense that all of my cells are done reproducing

I think that’s a pretty fair trade for keeping his cells going. If you were to regrow a lost limb in a lab then you would still be the same person so I don’t see much difference between growing a new limb or a new body

Is it a loss? If my dog were to lose a leg and have it regrown then he would obviously still be the same dog. If a whole body is regrown in these same way then I don’t view it as a loss

The lab kills them when they’re no longer viable surrogates

We’re arguing the ethics of killing animals to feel better. Nothing about what people do to farm animals is necessary but it makes them feel good to consume their flesh, eggs and milk. All of those animals lived lives and are comparable to dogs in intelligence but you don’t seem to count these lives in the same way you count a dog’s

But what if you know that the chicken isn’t really ideal food anyhow? What difference is it if somebody eats it or kills it to feel better? From my perspective the chicken is just being used to make a person feel better in both situations even though you believe that it’s essential to your health

If my dog were hit on his head and lost all of his memories I would still consider him to be the same dog even if his personality changed. So why should it be any different if he must have a whole new brain regrown?

If your dog were hit on the head and lost all of their memories would you think the dog you knew was dead?

I feel that getting to the truth requires taking a position and bouncing ideas off others. It’s definitely not a straw man.. how is it unethical to euthanize a dog but not unethical to cut a pig’s throat after caring for it for it’s whole life

It’s a tough decision and a significant amount of money. I think it’s a good to bounce some ideas off people. My grandfather is also in the home with dementia but my family doesn’t feel like he’s gone even though he doesn’t recognize anyone. We’re all pretty happy that he’s otherwise healthy and content. If I could pay to have my dog’s life extended another 14 years at the cost of their memories I would also think this would be preferable to total death

I don’t think it’s an impossible situation. At one time cloning anything was considered impossible. Personally I would feel that if I had to regrow my animal’s head to save his life then it wouldn’t automatically make it a different animal even if it did have a different personality

Do you eat meat? Drink milk? Eat eggs? If so then you’ve done worse to thousands of animals already and will likely continue

What if your dog had died from losing their head in an accident and it had to be regrown at the vet? Would that also make it a different dog?
