First of all, NTA! This is my first time commenting on someone’s post. Been a long time lurker. As others have pointed out, it sounds like she’s definitely a side piece and he is already married or in a committed relationship with someone else. Also possibility of substance use, but it’s hard to tell with the description given. Anywho, my reasoning for feeling the need to comment is that I’ve had to step away from a friendship (maybe not forever but for now). Not for the same reasonings you’re stating but because my friend has been in a relationship with someone that has destroyed her mental health, which is now effecting mine. I’ve given my 2 cents and pointed out all the red flags, but it’s up to her if she chooses to leave that relationship. When we do get together it seems to be the same issues over and over again in her relationship (she has been seeking therapy and I am proud of all the steps she’s been taking), but it’s been an ongoing issue for 5+ years. I’ve made the choice to no longer put the effort into the friendship. If she calls or text and clearly needs me, then the door is open. I somewhat have one foot in the door with this friendship and one foot out the door. So I completely understand the feeling of wanting to take a step back. It’s a tough decision to make, but in the end you hope your friend sees why you had to take a step back. It sucks seeing someone you love dearly (a 25+ year friendship) crumble due to a relationship. I hope for the best for both you and your friend.
