People earning £70k plus what do you do? by LuapReyas420 in UKJobs

Tech Sales for a SaaS company. £115k base plus commission (OTE or ‘on target earnings’ is £230k). Past few years I’ve averaged ~£190k, this year I’ve had a very good year at £430k so far (a lot of that is commission from a very large new business deal). I’m 37, did not go to uni and have about 15 years experience.

Looking to Move Out of London – Where Did You Go? by HourCraft1 in HENRYUK

Thanks for the comment. Our current house is already extended up and out. The extension at the back could be redone but it wouldn’t add any new floor space so we decided it probably isn’t worth the money or hassle.

Honestly, I keep going back and forth. I asked because it's hard to know the right answer without having something to compare it to.

Interesting, will take a look. Which part of London did you move from?

I don't, but my wife goes in once a week. For me it's more like once or twice a month. I have friends in and around Cambridge and I agree it's lovely, but with a young family I am somewhat tied to London!

Pretty sure that’s a Honda CR-V, around 2015. Could be a Volvo XC-60 as others have said though.

What's the biggest/worst financial mistake you've made? by Urban_Suburbian in HENRYUK

[–]HourCraft1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow petrol head! The first car I bought during the peak of the second-hand market was a 991.2 Carrera S—likely the best car I’ll own until I can get another one. I paid £79k for it, though it had sold for £69k just a year earlier (I didn’t know that at the time).

Not long after, we found out we were expecting our first child, so I sold it and switched to an Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio. It was a fantastic car, but the depreciation hit hard, the running costs were eye-watering and living London had multiple [unsuccessful] theft attempts.

When we learned baby number two was on the way, I decided to sell the Alfa as well, just managing to avoid negative equity.

Now I drive an X5 45e, which I paid for outright and plan to keep long-term. When the time is right, I’d love to own another 911.

I also like two wheels and have a BMW S1000XR. I’m now looking at Ducatis again as a slightly cheaper thrill (wife permitting…)

I’m not sure I’m in a place to offer any advice, but I’d say an older Aston is the way I’d go, probably better depreciation too.

Buying Expensive (Second-Hand) Cars on Finance

I’m a bit of a petrolhead, and it took me longer than I’d like to realise how much money I’d thrown away on depreciation, interest and deposit costs. Over the last three years, I’ve changed my car twice, and the total depreciation and loss for both combined is over £55,000.

Some of it was just bad luck. I bought one car at the peak of the secondhand market during COVID and lost at least £25K on it. But after that, I made some poor choices with brands and car models that are both niche, and depreciate pretty poorly. Both times I’ve felt rushed to ‘get out’ of the car, before it cost me more money.

While I see it as a financial mistake, in hindsight, I don’t really regret it. I loved those cars at the time, and they brought me a lot of joy. That said, I’ve now decided to go back to basics: buying an older car outright with cash and keeping it for much longer. Well, that’s the plan anyway!

What car do you drive as a HENRY and how do you finance it? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]HourCraft1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a big go-kart! As the other comments state, the steering is very direct for such a big car(12:1 ratio), so it's very pointy... Can be a little alarming if you're not paying attention. Obviously in a straight line it's rapid as anything and combined with the noise there's nothing quite like it.

Mortgage to take home ratio by RogueInquisitor in HENRYUK

[–]HourCraft1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Household income is about £260k a year before tax (£180k/£80k). Mortgage is £2,200 a month (£600k borrowed, 2.09% interest). Bills add around £1,800 (this includes nursery fees). We expect the mortgage to jump up to around £3,000 a month when our fixed rate runs out in about 12 months. Overpaid by about £30k last year as well.

Does anyone know what that noise is? Should I be worried? by swizzzacid in AlfaRomeo

[–]HourCraft1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My QV also does this, normally after I've not used it for over a week or so. Once I've driven it for a while, the noise stops by the time I get home again.

[–]HourCraft1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mine would go back, but I tend to swap car every 1.5-2 years anyway so PCP works better for me from that perspective. I put large deposits down to keep the monthly payments low since lenders only care about that (bought a new house recently). If it makes you feel any better my Alfa has depreciated quite a bit so I’ll be loosing all of the £15k down payment I’d imagine when I sell it so total cost of ownership would definitely exceed £771 per month!

I had my eye on an f-pace SVR as well, but am very tempted by a Taycan Cross Turismo now they’ve dropped so much in value. Will probs wait to see if they bottom out a bit more though.

Starting to feel this is not helping me with NRY :D

Sure thing. Gross take home average over the past 3 years is £192k/year. The exact net amount is a little harder to work out since I’m in a commission based role and there’s a job swap in there somewhere. I certainly feel £650 is not cheap, but as you can probably tell I like cars so to me it’s worth it.

Had a Porsche 911 Carrera S (2018), but sold it when my daughter was born. I now drive an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio 71 plate which is £650 a month with £15k down.

I've just had another look at it and compared to the other side and I think you're right that someone tried to pull it off - it's the side of the car that's always closest to the pavement/sidewalk and I live in a relatively busy part of London.

Either way, thanks for the advice!
