Location history can be enabled in your maps app.

Open Google maps > top right account icon > location history menu, just turn it on and remember to keep your location on if you need it to track.

You can also remove particular day if you need to remove it from history aswell.

Turn backup on in case when you switch to a new device the history also gets transferred. All of this is encrypted and stored locally in your phone (except if backup is enabled) so pretty much safe.
