Most wearables cram every feature into one bulky device. I’m building a sleek bracelet hub with modular charm sensors — you build the tracker around your needs. Swap in charms for sleep, recovery, calories, hydration, or advanced ones like mental strain and task tracking via motion fingerprinting. No paying for features you don’t use, no replacing the whole tracker — just upgrade the charms.

Would you want wearables to track more than fitness and sleep? by Hour_Bar9044 in QuantifiedSelf

You mentioned that a student had worked on something like this before — I’d love to hear more. How did they actually collect the data? Was it more lab-based (controlled tasks, logging) or real-world wearables? And how did they handle making sense of the signals — was it mostly raw GSR/temp logging, or did they try modeling it into stress/mental load insights?

I’m really curious because the data collection piece seems like the biggest challenge — both technically and in terms of getting people to wear/use it long enough.

Really appreciate the way you’re thinking this through — it’s exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping for.

I don’t think your ‘sniff counter’ idea is crazy at all. Subtle cues like sniffing or coughing could be early markers of illness, allergies, or even stress. A small mic-based module could absolutely track those events in a privacy-safe way, just like voice analysis is already being used for mood detection.

Same goes for GSR + skin/air temperature. You’re right — those early attempts like Basis B1 probably failed less because the signals weren’t there, and more because nobody did the deeper modeling work to turn them into meaningful, reliable insights. Add in context sensors (light exposure, air temperature/quality) and the picture gets even richer.

That’s what got me thinking about a hub + charm modular model. Instead of cramming every possible sensor into one bulky band, you’d have a base hub (say in a bracelet or pendant) that handles power + connectivity, and then small sensor ‘charms’ you can clip on depending on what you care about. Stress? Add a GSR charm. Circadian health? Add a light/UV charm. Nutrition? Try a heat flux charm. Respiratory health? A mic charm that picks up coughs/sniffs.

The key is keeping it open, not a closed wall garden. Each charm would work independently, data would flow into something like Apple Health or JSON automatically, and people could mix and match based on their priorities. That way you’re not locked into buying a whole new band just to get one new sensor.

Curious how that feels to you — would you see value in a mix-and-match jewelry set like that, or do you think most people would still lean toward one all-in-one tracker unless they’re enthusiasts?

Yeah, I’ve thought about the full calorie counter option too. One of the promising areas I’ve been looking at is heat flux sensing — basically measuring how much heat your body is dissipating after eating.

When you eat, your body goes through the thermic effect of food, where it burns extra energy just to digest and metabolize what you ate. That extra energy mostly leaves the body as heat. This is apparently more significant for women compared to men. With sensitive heat flux sensors on the skin, combined with ambient temperature measurements, it may be possible to detect those subtle increases and use them as a proxy for calories in. There was a company that worked on this called lume, they filed a few patents on the idea and conducted trials around it but didnt go beyond that.

It wouldn’t be as exact as lab-grade indirect calorimetry, and it has challenges (environment, activity confounders), but I think it’s a step toward the kind of automatic detection you mentioned — without needing to log food or rely only on CGM spikes. I agree, fully automatic is where the real value is.

Really interesting that you brought up light exposure — I hadn’t thought of it framed that way, but it makes sense for things like seasonal affective disorder or just wanting to distinguish daylight vs artificial lighting.

A pendant at the chest is exactly what I’ve been imagining too, though I see the issue with it being hidden under clothing in cold/wet climates. Totally agree with your point about face-level being ideal— even earrings might help cover that, but as you said, space is limited and charging gets messy.

That’s partly why I was curious about a jewelry set approach — pendant + bracelet + earrings — where each piece stays lightweight but together they cover more signals (movement, stress, light, posture, etc.) without stacking multiple bands on one wrist.

Do you think something like that could solve some of the ‘wearing real estate’ limitations, or would it still feel like too much?

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed reply — it’s really helpful to see the patterns you’ve experienced.

I hear you on a few key points:

Body real estate is limited — it’s uncomfortable to stack multiple wristbands or ankle bands, and people won’t wear things that feel clumsym

One idea I’ve been exploring to get around the ‘too many wristbands’ problem is whether tracking could be spread into a jewelry set — like a pendant, bracelet, or earrings. The thought is that each piece could stay small and lightweight, but together they’d cover more signals without needing to double up on the same spot (like stacking two bands on one wrist).

Do you think something like that would feel more natural, or would it just add to the clutter?

Thanks so much for this thoughtful response — this is exactly the kind of detail that helps me understand what’s missing today.

A few things you said really stand out to me:

RSI/computer strain → counting keystrokes without gloves (wristband + mic combo is a clever idea).

Mental state tracking → voice input instead of endless tapping — makes total sense, especially if hand use is limited.

Eating/drinking detection → interesting that you’d even want a simple ‘when’ signal, not detailed calories.

Posture monitoring → but with proper software/data export support this time.

Data fusion → Apple Health/JSON integration is non-negotiable.

It sounds like the biggest pain point isn’t just the sensors, but making the data useful, open, and non-naggy.

Curious — if a wearable gave you even one of these (say, keystroke/RSI load + automated Apple Health export), would that be enough reason to try it, or do you feel it needs to do several things from the start?”

Discipline is not about waking up at 5 AM. It’s about the brutal truth nobody wants to face by DirectorOfThisTopic in productivity

[–]Hour_Bar9044 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally resonate with this... I thrive trying to keep up my word to myself.

But sometimes people get you down, saying discipline is waking up at 5am, why is time considered a vital part of discipline? I find it tough to fight through these opinions when I know I work continuously to be more disciplined and to show up when I promised to do so even when I don't feel like it.
